Returning to the dating scene after getting divorced can be daunting and overwhelming. After all, if you’ve spent years or decades in a relationship, it’s difficult to get yourself out of a “coupled up” mindset and back into a “searching for The One” headspace.
But don’t let this stop you from dating after divorce! If you’ve completely healed from the fallout and are 100% ready to move on, you can ease yourself back into the dating scene by using these pointers:
Determine What You Want
Are you searching for a potential partner who’s ready to start a long-term relationship? Or do you simply want to connect with like-minded people and have fun with casual dating? Identifying the ideal outcome will help you enjoy your dating experience and avoid having your heart broken (or breaking someone else’s).
Establish Realistic Expectations
It’s exciting to schedule a first date, especially if it’s been years since your last “first date,” but make sure you won’t get carried away. Remember: not all first dates are successful, and you’ll likely have to meet with several people before finding the ideal partner.
To avoid disappointment, think of dating not just as a means to find a future spouse but also as a learning opportunity. Your next date might not immediately lead you to Ms. or Mr. Right, but it might help you discover a new hobby or make a new friend.
This shift in perspective will reduce the stress and pressure that inevitably come with searching for “The One.” This, in turn, can make dating a more enjoyable experience.
Don’t Compare and Contrast
Sure, you can be friends with your ex after getting divorced, but don’t use them as a yardstick to measure future dates against. Doing so won’t only make you miserable; it can also prevent you from finding someone who may not be your usual type but can actually make you happy.
Instead of playing the compare and contrast game, take the time to know the people you date. Find out if you share the same values and principles, and figure out if and how your personalities can mesh.
Consider Avenues Beyond Traditional Dating
Ask friends or coworkers how to start dating after divorce, and they’ll probably push you into going to a bar or club and seeking out single and interested people. But, while this is a tested and proven way of getting a date, it’s not the only avenue you can take.
You can also sign up for a matchmaking service that will connect you with people who meet your criteria and are also looking for serious relationships. Another step is to work with a dating coach who will help you boost your confidence, improve your communication skills, and navigate the challenges of dating.
I’m including this tip not only because I work as a dating coach but also because I’ve helped many divorcees find their happy-ever-after. Through my front-row seat in the dating world, I can honestly tell you that there is life after divorce — as long as you’re willing to take the risk.
Step Back Into the Dating World
Post-divorce dating is by no means an easy task. But by using the pointers listed above and taking other helpful steps, you can successfully get back into the dating scene and eventually find the right person to fall in love with.
