A new ranking has revealed the US states unluckiest in love. Judging from the percentage of the population that is single, divorce rates, and dating app searches, it’s looking pretty lonely for Nevada.
Dating site experts, datingscout.com analyzed monthly Google searches relating to dating websites and apps between September 2023 and August 2024. The search figures were compared to the divorced and single population for all 50 states, giving each a weighting to determine a rank from unluckiest to luckiest for finding love.
Google searches analyzed included terms such as ‘New account on [dating]’, ‘How to use [dating] dating app’, and ‘Best dating site’. These searches were scaled to per 100,000 residents in each state.
Nevada ranked the unluckiest with 29.26 monthly Google searches per 100,000 residents, 35.6% of the population never married, and 13% of the population divorced, over 2% higher than the 10.91% national average. The states’ favorite dating app of choice was Hinge with 94.55 monthly searches for ‘how does hinge work’.
New Mexico ranked second unluckiest in the romance department with 23.65 Google searches per 100,000 residents, and even higher divorce and singles rates of 13.1% and 37.6% respectively. The state has the joint highest percentage of the population divorced. New Mexicans were opting for dating app Tinder in their pursuit of love.
Taking the third spot was Rhode Island with a hefty 43.3 searches, 11% of the population divorced, and 38.2% single. With the second highest search number for ‘best dating app’, Rhode Islanders are desperate for love.
The fourth and fifth unluckiest states in love were Alaska and Oregon with over 30 monthly dating searches each.
The five states unluckiest in love

While some states are struggling to find love, others have been having more luck finding the one.
The least unlucky state for finding love was Utah with the fourth lowest divorce percentage of 9.1% and 32.6% of the population single. The state still had a high dating app search rate of 28.94 monthly searches with Hinge being their top dating app, showing there’s still more love to be found.
South Carolina was the second luckiest state in love. This result is due to a low monthly search number of 20.54 and only 10% of residents divorced.
Next up was Texas with the second-lowest searches for dating apps per 100,000 residents and 9.8% of Texans divorced. Those still single were using Tinder to meet new people.
The five states luckiest in love

Whether lucky or unlucky in the pursuit of love in modern America, dating apps have become one of the main ways to meet new people. The state most obsessed with dating apps was Vermont with 48.1 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. America’s favorite dating app overall was Hinge with an average of 15,748 monthly searches, followed closely by Tinder at 14,753 monthly searches. The third favorite to fall back on for all states was Bumble.
Commenting on the results, a spokesperson from datingscout.com says:
“It’s interesting to see which states are coming up short in finding love, especially with the number of Eastern and Western states being higher on the list. The central states seem to have more luck. This could be due to many factors such as location, political standing, and diversity. However, it’s clear overall that online dating is a big factor in finding love no matter where you are.
“Online dating sites and apps have become the go-to option for finding everything from a hot date to true love. In today’s society, meeting someone online is as normal as encountering a stranger during your daily commute.
“The chances of finding your match on online platforms are significantly higher now than before. Distance is no longer an insurmountable obstacle, as online dating has facilitated countless connections worldwide so it’s not surprising that more people are searching for sites to help them find the one.”
Experts offered six insightful tips on the advantages of online dating to help you find some luck in love.
1. Ease of contact
We may turn into a stuttering helpless mess when we meet someone new. With online dating, you can say goodbye to this awkwardness. Shoot your shot sans the embarrassment. Send a message and see what happens.
2. Anonymity
If you’re a private person, the anonymity that online dating sites give is godsent. That way, you get to meet people without divulging your pertinent details. Contacting and ending a flirtation is also easier, and much less awkward, on online dating sites.
3. Profile Check
Is he or she really what you want in a possible partner? Take one long look at a possible flirt’s profile to see if you’re going to work.
4. Higher success rate
Online dating sites all have a purpose; you signed up with that in mind. When you’re on an online dating site with like-minded individuals, the probability of finding a match is higher than say hitching a ride during rush hour.
5. Time-saving
Registration and profile creation takes almost no time at all. Also, most online dating sites are available as mobile apps so you can flirt and get in touch while on the go.
