The Food & Drug Administration on Thursday approved a gene therapy treatment for patients of a rare genetic defect that causes blindness. This is the third gene therapy treatment ever approved by the FDA and the first meant to treat a genetic defect. The therapy, called Luxturna, injects a benign virus into the eye and delivers a healthy version of the gene responsible for creating retinal proteins necessary for vision. Scientists hope that this can provide the blueprint for more gene therapies in the future, and Social is excited about the prospect. Gene therapy gets 79 percent positive sentiments online, and it is likely that the good reviews will keep coming as Luxturna is rolled out next year. –Hugo Guzman
