SPRING BREAK: I’m going to take the 15-year-old somewhere from March 26 to April 1. I’m thinking Europe (Barcelona, Rome/Florence, Prague) or Morocco. She’s interested in art and architecture in small doses. She likes interesting people, sane adventures, shopping. In the least so far: Barcelona/Seville?Valencia. I’d welcome suggestions at [email protected].

We were at lunch when the Teenage Adult took out her phone. Not to text her friends — we discourage that when we are talking — but to use the finger spinner on the back of her phone’s case.
“That is really cool,” I said.
“That’s what I thought when I invented it two weeks ago,” she said.
We operate on a need-to-know basis around here. Could this be her way of announcing her first success as an inventor? Visions of sugar plums danced in my head. They soon dissolved. What we had here is a case of near-synchronicity. And a request to the Teenage Adult: The next time you get an idea for a product… tell your parents. [Reader comments suggest that the Protective Phone Case with Fidget Finger Spinner isn’t very protective. To buy this insta-fad from Amazon, click here.]
Here’s something I wish I’d invented: a Light Up Compact Mirror with Rechargeable Battery Pack for Smartphones.
The design is deceptive. It looks like a standard 3.5” circular compact in a stylish colored shell that comes in a choice of colors (red, gold, purple, rose). But inside the 7-ounce makeup mirror is a battery pack that can charge an iPhone, iPad, Android or any USB-powered devices. Two must-have items in one? Exactly. [To buy the Compact Mirror with battery pack from Amazon, click here.]
The compact has 2 mirrors, 1 normal and 1 magnified 3X. It has a ring light so you can fix your makeup in the dark. With 3000mAh capacity and 2.1A charging, it can quickly power a smartphone, a tablet or a speaker. Of course it has a matching microfiber pouch and a charger cable.
A gift for a kid. A gift for a woman on the go. Butler-and-daughter, both — forgive the pun — on the case.
