Give it to Zenescope comics to pull out yet another great classic fairy tale and remake it into their own brand of different, fun and well, Grimm.
I’m sure most of us remember the story of Hansel and Gretel, two German siblings who are taken in the woods by a witch and cooked in the oven. That’s the fairy tale version of the story. Now I’m going to tell you the Zenescope version of the story.
Welcome to Gretel, issue #1.
In this version of the story, we see the young siblings in separate oversize bird cages hanging from the ceiling in the witch’s cottage in the woods. Gretel is forced to watch as her brother Hans is butchered like a pig, then is forced by the witch to eat her brother’s heart, trauma I couldn’t even imagine dealing with.
How does the young Gretel deal with it? She’s somehow powered by the heart and manages to escape the cage, kills the witch and then runs away as fast as she can.
This begins the story of Gretel the witch hunter, two hundred and seventy-four years ago.
Gretel soon learns that amongst her newfound powers is her slow aging process. So much so that she goes from about age eight in the beginning of the story to the next time we see her, sixty-six years later, in Poland, she looks like she’s barely a tween.
That’s when she’s befriended by her soon to be mentor, an old man named Samuel, who as the book goes along, apparently doesn’t age much himself.
Samuel teaches Gretel to control her powers and teaches her to be a world-class witch hunter, which, after all, is only fitting considering the ordeal she’s been through decades before.
When Gretel kills a witch she must eat her heart and when she does, gains the powers of that witch, though for how long no one, not even Gretel knows.
It’s a great beginning to what looks to be an awesome storyline throughout this series. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, get out to your local comic book store and buy a copy today. Or tomorrow. Either works for me.
All in all, a very solid four purple goatees out of five!
