How to Fix a Hole in Siding
Transcript provided by YouTube:

hey kids so today i’m going to show you
0:02
how to replace a piece of siding there
0:04
actually was a hole here and i just
0:05
replaced it so i’m going to show you i’m
0:07
going to walk you through what i did
0:09
uh but i do have a dad joke for you
0:11
before we get started so
0:12
a guy walks into a hardware store
0:15
and he says i need a ladder to work on
0:17
my siding and to get up on my roof
0:20
so the guy says we have a six foot
0:22
ladder that will work for your siding
0:24
and an extension ladder that will get
0:26
you up on your roof do you want them
0:28
both
0:29
and the guy says i’ll take the former
0:30
now and the latter ladder later
0:34
so anyway let’s get started
0:37
okay so i have this hole here because so
0:40
this um when we did our kitchen remodel
0:42
this used to be our kitchen and our
0:44
kitchen’s at the other side of the house
0:46
now so this actually used to be a vent
0:49
for
0:50
our dishwasher
0:52
and there used to be a
0:53
a pipe coming out of here and running
0:55
straight down so obviously this is
0:57
what’s left and when we were redoing the
1:00
inside i put a this is a two by four
1:02
right inside there nice and solid but i
1:05
obviously need to fix this and so um
1:07
what i’m gonna have to do unfortunately
1:09
it’s affecting this piece of siding and
1:11
this piece of siding so this one’s going
1:14
to be fairly easy because i’m just going
1:15
to cut it right here and cut it right
1:17
here and pop this out
1:20
and then you know
1:21
it probably got some paint that’s kind
1:23
of sealed so you just take a knife and
1:24
run it alongside there so that it
1:26
doesn’t uh pop this out too and kind of
1:28
make a mess we want it to be nice and
1:30
clean
1:31
and then we’ll have to kind of pry
1:33
things out and we’ll pop that one out
1:35
and then with this one because it’s kind
1:37
of here and it’s part of with the window
1:40
here i don’t want my my groove to be
1:43
right here i probably want it like right
1:45
here somewhere over here where it’s
1:47
staggered
1:48
okay so i’ll probably cut it like here
1:51
and just replace this piece and then but
1:53
i’m going to replace this whole piece
1:55
and then we don’t have to mess with this
1:56
at all
1:58
all right so looks like i got a nail
2:00
here i’m just going to pull that out
2:08
okay
2:10
let’s see here i might even be able to
2:12
use this piece right here
2:14
um i’ll cut it off here take that and
2:16
then end up putting it here uh may as
2:19
well because i think that’s enough of a
2:22
piece to fit there so i just use a knife
2:25
so we’re just going to kind of cut away
2:27
here
2:28
it’s kind of tight so
2:30
you get what i’m doing though i’m
2:32
basically just going to run a nice
2:35
straight line there right all right so
2:37
hopefully you can see now now
2:39
i can
2:43
you probably can’t exactly see that but
2:45
you know what i’m doing right i’m trying
2:46
to i’m trying to get that free from the
2:49
paint or if there was caulk two that was
2:52
holding it together
2:53
okay
2:54
so that’s what we’re trying to do here
3:04
okay
3:05
and then we’ll end up caulking uh the
3:07
new stuff later so
3:10
and it’ll be fine and painted later
3:13
okay
3:15
basically we’re trying to mess with this
3:17
and this so i just want to make sure
3:19
it’s free good
3:21
okay
3:25
okay
3:26
and then we’ll go here
3:31
so we’re going to remove that whole
3:32
thing
3:35
okay
3:38
like that we’re just going to want to
3:40
try to pry that out of there
3:45
okay
3:46
i can see where the nail is here to it
3:48
so if i can get up underneath there
3:51
let’s see here
3:56
okay
3:59
okay
4:00
you see that nail
4:02
right there
4:03
that just popped loose so now i can yank
4:05
that out
4:08
[Music]
4:12
to help set it free let’s see
4:17
much easier now
4:18
and there was that nail right here that
4:20
i already removed
4:22
okay
4:26
there we go
4:28
kind of set it free
4:31
okay and
4:33
so actually i can go ahead and cut this
4:35
now i’m gonna cut it
4:38
uh you know what remember how i was
4:39
gonna use that other piece i got plenty
4:41
of siding from when they when we did my
4:43
remodel on the house so it’s no big deal
4:45
i’m not going to be able to do that now
4:46
because that that split right there
4:48
right
4:49
i have to go ahead and cut
4:52
cut that
4:55
so that it can free up because we’re
4:56
going to need to shove that other piece
4:58
up underneath there right so let’s go
5:01
ahead and
5:02
just cut aside
5:04
and cut the side i don’t need that i’m
5:07
going to try not to go ahead and mess
5:09
with that
5:11
let’s do that
5:16
okay
5:18
now
5:25
okay we’re just trying to get that away
5:27
from there
5:29
enough to where we’ll be able to slide
5:31
the next one up underneath there okay
5:34
i might be able to pop that out down
5:47
okay
5:49
there’s a nail right there
5:54
i want to remove that so that this thing
5:55
can slide
5:56
up underneath there
5:58
and i can see a nail right here too
6:04
okay all right so here’s what i’m going
6:06
to do now
6:08
i’m going to draw
6:09
a line right here
6:11
all right so here’s my level and so now
6:13
this makes it good so i’m not
6:16
wonky like this i can actually make sure
6:18
that i’m level
6:19
by checking the bubble here and i’m
6:21
going to get as close as i can over to
6:23
this thing over to this where the hole
6:25
is
6:26
okay and let’s make it level
6:29
okay that looks good right there
6:33
so that’s where i’m going to make my
6:34
line right here because i want to remove
6:36
this i don’t want to remove that i’m
6:38
going to leave that alone okay
6:40
uh so
6:42
and i’m going to show you the tool i’m
6:43
going to use
6:48
this is called an oscillating multi-tool
6:52
i will do a tool tuesday on this because
6:54
it’s such a great tool and so what what
6:56
this does
6:57
you know there’s different ways you
6:58
could do this you could score this with
7:00
a knife and go over and over again be
7:02
really careful with it especially since
7:04
you’re only doing one
7:06
um
7:07
or
7:08
you could use a you know
7:10
just a regular saw and kind of work on
7:12
it and be really careful but this will
7:14
make quick work of it because what
7:16
happens is this blade right here just
7:18
goes back and forth really fast okay so
7:20
i’m just going to be able to go like
7:21
this put it here and work it down
7:24
okay but what i want to do
7:27
is you got to be careful because i don’t
7:28
want to go into
7:30
the siding behind me it’s not going to
7:31
be a huge deal but right down here we
7:34
definitely don’t want to do that right
7:35
because then you’ll see that um and
7:37
really like i said overkill it’s
7:39
probably not that big a deal because we
7:41
can just run a bit of caulk there but
7:43
what we can do is we can kind of pull
7:45
this away a little bit and then
7:47
stick something underneath there a piece
7:49
of metal or something to stop the the
7:51
blade from going all the way through so
7:53
that’s how i’m gonna do it just to show
7:54
you all right so i just got this piece
7:56
of real thin sheet metal okay um i have
8:00
scraps all over the place stuff like
8:02
this i’m sure you can
8:04
understand that um if you ever
8:06
have been in a
8:08
somebody’s shop they have stuff that’s
8:10
just hanging around so i’m just going to
8:11
do that just to protect it and then
8:13
again this line doesn’t need to be
8:15
perfect but what you could do i mean
8:16
there’s a couple things you could do you
8:18
could put something up here as your
8:20
guide and then just have that thing just
8:22
go right down or
8:24
you can just freehand it let’s see how
8:26
that goes i’m just going to try to
8:27
freehand it
8:28
okay
8:30
and they make these oscillating tools um
8:33
cordless
8:34
so
8:36
but i happen to have a
8:38
outlet right here so i’m just going to
8:40
go ahead and do this here
8:45
[Music]
8:56
so
8:57
[Music]
9:13
there you go
9:14
and then you can see
9:17
uh
9:19
what you got underneath here right and
9:21
so that so as we
9:23
as we rebuild this now you want to
9:25
always do siding
9:27
from bottom to top right um so normally
9:30
if this wasn’t here and you were just
9:32
doing your own siding obviously start
9:34
from the bottom and just layer it and
9:35
layer it and layer it but now we’re
9:37
going to have to kind of work with this
9:39
we’re going to put a piece of siding in
9:40
here
9:41
if you can see my home
9:43
this is built in the 70s and it’s kind
9:45
of a strange thing that they’ve done
9:47
here this is like a
9:49
insulation of some sort i put the
9:51
backing in here of this wood and then
9:53
put a lot of insulation on the inside
9:55
when we were doing our remodel but this
9:57
is a little bit hokey
9:59
but this is covered too and we live in a
10:02
relatively mild climate the real way to
10:05
do this was probably to pull all this
10:07
out and actually replace it with
10:09
with plywood but we’re not going to do
10:11
that right so um
10:12
anyway so we probably do want to put
10:14
something in here
10:15
just
10:17
ah i mean i don’t know that it would
10:18
hurt if i end up just putting siding and
10:20
putting siding nobody’s ever gonna know
10:22
that’s there
10:23
but i will
10:24
so
10:25
i gotta see what i have that i can maybe
10:28
just fill that gap with uh
10:30
so let me go see what i can come up with
10:32
all right so here’s what i’m going to do
10:34
i found a piece of wood that was able to
10:36
cut down to this size it’s a little bit
10:39
bigger than what i what i need there
10:41
which is perfect so
10:43
then i’m just going to go ahead and draw
10:45
a line around it
10:54
make it nice and clean like that and
10:57
let’s see here
11:03
[Music]
11:05
[Applause]
11:07
so there we go
11:10
put a couple of
11:12
nails in there
11:14
i need to get these measurements i’m
11:15
gonna go ahead and
11:17
shoot this in
11:21
okay we’re gonna put that one in there
11:25
okay
11:27
that looks pretty good and these little
11:28
gaps here we’re just going to fill those
11:30
in with caulk so that’s no big deal
11:44
okay and the last piece
11:47
right here remember we pried this up
11:49
this one up so that we could slide this
11:51
in the back
11:56
okay
12:01
okay
12:03
all right you know what there’s a one
12:05
nail here that i’m fighting so um
12:07
because
12:08
we want the same reveal here right and
12:10
this is not quite the same this is a
12:12
little smaller this is a little bigger
12:14
so we’re gonna have to remove that nail
12:17
okay
12:18
so i’ve been fighting with this for a
12:19
little bit so i just want to be
12:21
transparent with you there was a nail
12:22
here that i was fighting with trying to
12:24
get it up there and then there’s
12:25
actually a nail here and
12:27
these side cutters work great for this
12:29
for removing these so i had to kind of
12:32
get inside there
12:33
and
12:34
keep working at it and finally i’m
12:36
pulling this thing out okay
12:39
because i was fighting that and that’s
12:41
why that thing wouldn’t slide up in
12:42
there so we should be good now
12:45
okay so now we’re just sliding it up
12:47
inside
12:48
i was actually
12:49
i put a notch in here trying to work
12:51
around it see that i just cut a little
12:53
notch because you’re not going to see it
12:54
i was going to try to do that but it
12:56
just i still was fighting it so i just
12:57
went ahead and
12:58
got that nail out so now
13:01
now we’re good to go
13:02
you can just see what your reveal is
13:04
here this is four and a half
13:06
and if you need to tap this if for some
13:09
reason you need to tap it you want to
13:10
get a separate block
13:12
and put it here and then just tap on it
13:15
you don’t want to tap on your siding
13:16
right because then you’ll you’ll leave
13:18
marks in your siding but if you put a
13:19
block of wood here
13:21
and you just tap on it that’ll keep you
13:23
from from making those marks right so
13:25
all right so i think we’re about good
13:30
yep looks good let’s go ahead and
13:33
put her in
13:43
[Music]
13:47
all right so now all you’ll do is just
13:49
go back through it here and these
13:51
fill up in those with caulk and then we
13:54
actually have some spare paint we had
13:55
our
13:56
house painted uh a couple years ago we
13:58
ended up getting with some getting some
13:59
extra paint so i’m just gonna paint over
14:01
this even though this actually is our
14:03
this was painted and it was removed from
14:04
our backyard so you want to make sure
14:06
that it looks nice and clean and there
14:08
we go
14:09
all right so i hope that was helpful for
14:12
you you know it might be a little bit
14:13
different on your house you might have
14:14
vinyl siding this is cedar siding uh the
14:17
sighting might be running a different
14:19
way but you get the general idea of what
14:21
you’re looking at in order to in order
14:23
to repair a hole if you have it on in
14:25
your sighting so
14:26
thanks for watching and god bless you
