Filling in for Sami, Theo Stockman asks what makes a date interesting and original?

Broadway & TV star Theo Stockman fills in for Sami Holden with dating tips while Sami is vacationing in a luxurious and exotic faraway place. Or doing Graduate school type stuff. Same thing right?

Dear Theo,
It seems like dating has become really unoriginal. People meet up for coffee or dinner. This doesn’t seem like a great way to stand out to the other person on the date. It feels too routine. Do you have any suggestions or unique ideas on how to go about making a date more original and memorable?
Sincerely, Wanting More than Restaurant Chatter

Dear Wanting More Than Restaurant Chatter,
I’ve always found that original and adventurous dates are the bee’s knees. For example, if you live in NYC, romantic alternative destinations could be a picnic at the Cloisters or Coney Island, etc. For non-New Yorkers, ANY location can be ripe for a lovah’s picnic. Sandwiches and some wine (wine always helps), and nothing but just the two of you amidst some beautiful scenery is the best way to just settle and connect. Also more activity-based dates are awesome–a wine and cheese class (wine is a theme here clearly), a ceramics class, a paddle/rowboat day, bowling….I think the truly important thing is to put yourself in an interesting and exciting atmosphere that provokes connection. Plus if the date is a bust, you can walk away from it with an experience you at least enjoyed. Or, like, a sweet bowl you made.
You can also non-creepily stalk the person’s Instagram and see what their interests are–if there is a pattern of them cooking lots of yum yums, have them over and cook together! A vinyl nerd like me? Record shopping day, wahoo! Anything that’s more intimate and comfortable than a crowded bar or “hip” restaurant will show them you’re interesting AF and worth getting to know. Best of luck to you–find the adventure out there and smooch in it!
