We live in a world of distractions. Some are internal such as your physical and mental health, and some are external such as the Internet, social media, TV, food, etc. But when you are distracted, it is very difficult to reach your goals, to move forward, no matter how small or how large those goals may be. You lose sight of fulfilling the steps to reaching your ultimate potential. Rest assured that anything worth having or worth achieving will present with challenges and too often those challenges become distractions. But your anchor and your focus are your methods of overcoming the challenges rather than succumbing to them.
When you lose your focus, your goals, whether short or long term, become like a mirage – a city shimmering in the distance, but wavering and slipping without an anchor until it disappears completely. When you lose your focus, your aspirations could easily vaporize and you are no longer anchored.
In a whole other category are the people who become distractions, even detractors. They are the naysayers and their litany goes something like this:
“Oh, that idea will never work.”
“Who do you think you are to try that?”
“You’re not smart enough to make that happen (whatever that may be for you).”
“Leave that for now. You have to first do/become ____________.”
These are just a few of the words that detractors use and they become distractions and obstacles.
If this resonates with you, naturally your response is to ask how you can overcome or block out the distractions so that you can move forward. At least, you should be asking that question. If not, then why aren’t you asking the question?
Your next question should be, “How do I overcome these distractions and get focused, anchored in my belief in my own success?”
Here are are few suggestions:
1. Acknowledge that you have obstacles or challenges. Acknowledging them means that you are aware of the distractions and even the detractors and when you are aware, you consciously determine to do something about it.
2. Acknowledge that the easiest path to take is always to listen to the detractors and to succumb to the pull of the distractions.
3. Engage in constructive activities that help you get back on track. Listen to an enlightening webinar or podcast, read a constructive/instructive book. Biographies are often great inspirations and can shore up your motivation.
4. Engage in a relaxing activity such as visiting a museum, engage in gardening, paint if you aren’t a painter. This gives your mind time to “regenerate” so that you can reactivate your creativity and your motivation. I have taken up photography. Loving it.
5. Meditate. This is the highest form of anchoring and focusing. You become open to receiving ideas and inspirations.
6. Pray. Speak to God. Express your gratitude and be open to asking for assistance in staying focused and anchored.
7. Take care of your health by eating right, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated. The importance of these three activities are directly related to your ability to think and to have the energy to take action.
It would be nice if we could just identity a goal and we achieve it in the blink of an eye and without any interference, setbacks, or roadblocks. That is neither how the world nor the universe works. We face challenges and experience obstacles all the time. The trick is to remain focused on your ultimate goals, your ultimate success or completion of your vision. For that you must stay focused; you must stay anchored and block out the distractions. You have to engage in activities that will keep you focused.
