Islam, as a comprehensive way of life, offers guidance not only in matters of worship but also in our daily routines and habits. The Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provide us with a blueprint for success in this life and the hereafter. Here are five essential habits that we should strive to incorporate into our daily lives, supported by the wisdom of our faith.
Wake Up Before Sunrise
Allah emphasizes the importance of the early morning in numerous verses of the Quran. One of the most notable is:
“Establish prayer at the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night and also the Qur’an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.” (Quran 17:78)
This verse highlights the significance of the Fajr prayer, which occurs before sunrise. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further emphasized this in a hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah:
“The most virtuous prayers are those that are offered in the depths of the night, and the best fast after Ramadan is Allah’s month of Muharram.” (Sahih Muslim)
The morning supplication of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) shines light on the importance of starting one’s day with prayer and the remembrance of Allah, “O Allah! I ask You for beneficial knowledge, permissible provisions, and acceptable righteous actions.”
- Beneficial Knowledge
This refers to knowledge that is useful and constructive, guiding one towards the truth and helping in both worldly and spiritual matters. It emphasizes seeking knowledge that benefits oneself and others, leading to personal growth and societal improvement. - Permissible Provisions
This part of the supplication asks for sustenance that is halal (permissible according to Islamic law) and pure. It highlights the importance of earning and consuming lawful and ethical provisions, which contribute to a wholesome and blessed life. - Acceptable Righteous Actions
This refers to deeds that are performed sincerely for the sake of Allah and following the authentic traditions of the Prophet (peace be upon him). It underscores the desire for one’s actions to be accepted by Allah, reflecting a commitment to living a life of piety and integrity.
Overall, this dua encapsulates a holistic approach to life, seeking intellectual, material, and spiritual well-being. It serves as a reminder to start the day with a focus on seeking beneficial knowledge, lawful sustenance, and performing righteous deeds that are pleasing to Allah.
Waking up before sunrise allows us to start our day with the remembrance of Allah, setting a positive tone for the hours ahead. It provides us with quiet moments for reflection, supplication, and planning. This early start can give us an edge in productivity and spiritual growth.
Moreover, scientific research supports the benefits of early rising. Studies have shown that individuals who wake up early tend to be more proactive, better planners, and experience lower levels of stress and depression. By aligning our schedules with the natural rhythm of day and night, we honor the fitrah (natural disposition) that Allah has created within us.
Exercise Regularly
Physical health is a trust from Allah, and we are responsible for maintaining it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged physical activity, as evidenced in this hadith:
“A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, while there is good in both.” (Sahih Muslim)
While this hadith refers to strength in faith, it also implies the importance of physical strength. Regular exercise helps us fulfill our duties more effectively, whether it’s performing prayers, fasting, or serving our communities.
The Quran also alludes to physical preparation:
“And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war by which you may terrify the enemy of Allah and your enemy and others besides them whom you do not know [but] whom Allah knows.” (Quran 8:60)
While this verse primarily refers to military preparation, it can be interpreted more broadly as an encouragement to maintain our physical fitness for various life challenges.
However, it’s crucial to exercise within our limits and avoid harm. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.” (Ibn Majah)
This principle applies to all aspects of life, including exercise. We should strive for improvement while respecting our body’s limitations.
Follow a Proper Sleep Schedule
Sleep is a blessing from Allah, as mentioned in the Quran:
“And We have made your sleep a means for rest.” (Quran 78:9)
Adequate sleep is essential for our physical and mental well-being. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us the etiquette of sleep, including supplications to recite before sleeping and upon waking. He also advised against staying up late unnecessarily:
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) disliked sleeping before the ‘Isha prayer and talking after it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This hadith encourages us to maintain a regular sleep schedule aligned with the prayer times. By sleeping early and waking up for Fajr, we naturally adopt a healthy sleep pattern.
To improve sleep quality, we can follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) by:
- Performing wudu before sleeping
- Sleeping on our right side
- Reciting the verse of the Footstool before sleeping
- Avoiding heavy meals close to bedtime
Read Daily
Seeking knowledge is a fundamental aspect of Islam. The first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was “Iqra” (Read). Allah says in the Quran:
“Read in the name of your Lord who created — Created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the most Generous — Who taught by the pen — Taught man that which he knew not.” (Quran 96:1–5)
This divine command emphasizes the importance of reading and learning. The Prophet (peace be upon him) further encouraged this, saying:
“The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
While this hadith specifically mentions the Quran, it can be extended to include beneficial knowledge in general. Reading expands our understanding, improves our cognitive abilities, and helps us become more informed and productive members of society.
In our current age of widespread misinformation, increasing our knowledge becomes even more crucial. We should strive to be well-informed and capable of distinguishing truth from falsehood. Regular reading habits can help us achieve this goal.
Practice Silence
Silence and reflection are highly valued in Islam. Allah says in the Quran:
“And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and fear without being apparent in speech — in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless.” (Quran 7:205)
This verse encourages us to engage in quiet remembrance of Allah, highlighting the power of silent reflection. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasized the importance of controlling our speech:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Practicing silence allows us to develop self-control, enhance our ability to listen, and create space for deeper contemplation. It can be a form of worship when coupled with the remembrance of Allah and reflection on His creation.
In our noisy, fast-paced world, moments of silence become even more precious. They provide opportunities for self-assessment, spiritual growth, and mental rejuvenation.
Incorporating these five habits — waking up before sunrise, exercising regularly, following a proper sleep schedule, reading daily, and practicing silence — can significantly enhance our lives. These practices align with Islamic teachings and scientific research, offering benefits for our physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
By adopting these habits, we strive to fulfill our potential as caretakers on earth. We become better equipped to serve our communities, increase our knowledge, maintain our health, and strengthen our relationship with our Creator.
