He just thought nine was a nice number,

something to do with the three threes.

He populated it with all manner of beasts,

including a man created from the sternum of a woman,

Lilith, first and only wife.

God handed Lilith a dandelion,

told her she could live in ignorance forever if she ate it.

She forced it down her husband’s throat and called it bliss.

A female priest tells me this story, and I still believe in God.

I sleep with the Bible underneath my pillow

I’ve been told I look like Lilith.

I don’t know if I’ve cracked my sternum for enough men to have her hands.

I make dandelion soup and sing God’s name as I swallow.

A man presses me into his body and his hands are God’s.
