A love poem for my mother and father
Last August, my father passed away. My mother and father had been married for almost 50 years, every day of which was a peaceful, gracious and nourishing blessing for our entire family.
When he passed away, there was a tough grieving period for all of us, especially for my mother. Seeing how she was missing his presence made me want to write this short poem, with ‘I’ refering to my mother, and ‘You’ to my father.
With immense gratitude for their timeless love, here flow the words…
I am the ocean, you are the sky.
The earth, is our home.
We may seem far away from each other,
but, we are always together:
the horizon is where we always meet and live together.
The sun — our love — will set on the horizon,
painting it with yellows, pinks and oranges.
The darkness of the night — your passing — making me wonder if we’ll see each other again.
Yet, faithfully, the sun rises again, the next day, the next breath,
reminding us that our love shall never disappear.
The rain dripping from your clouds, is how you talk to me.
The water evaporating from my being, is how I talk with you.
I am spacious — thousands of my miles are always open to you –
for I want to hold room for you.
I want you to feel accepted, loved and wanted.
You are colorful, vibrant and expansive — laden with stars, rainbows, clouds and galaxies –
for you want to soak me with your enlightenment, love and wonder,
reminding me of the sacred diversity of your being.
I am you.
You are me.
There is never any separation between the ocean and the sky.
The horizon is where we unite,
and no matter how beautifully and longingly time moves forward,
the horizon is always there, with the sun — our love — painting over it a miraculous reminder
that we are connected, forever.
