What does it mean to be a man? Be strong. Don’t cry or show your emotions. Watch sports. Drink beer. These seem to be the images of manhood taught to us. So, we talked with a group of men about how they think people see them as men. Is there more than one way to be a “man?”

The guy that comes up at about 1:45 talking about how men’s emotions go inward instead of outward (and the guy after him) is realness. All too often in gender discourse, namely when a man goes on some spree of violence it is often said that men express outwards and women express inwardly. What is usually left out is how men internalize their emotions and feelings and are basically taught that we shouldn’t need, and do not deserve, help. That kind of teaching is a recipe for disaster that a lot of people are just now acknowledging. (On a side… Read more »
I could sit and talk with those guys. The third guy, the husky black guy in the hat (very cool hat btw), seemed to have the strongest grip on it all. Was no surprise that he was raised by a man. What was even more fascinating is that once the vid ended, I clicked on the same for women. That shit was real also. Sort of amazing when we toss out all the hysteria, anger, and agendas and just talk. Found both easy to listen to as I did not have to wade through a bunch of junk just to… Read more »
Sort of amazing when we toss out all the hysteria, anger, and agendas and just talk. Found both easy to listen to as I did not have to wade through a bunch of junk just to hear the message. I would agree with you if it wasn’t for the guy near the start that backtracks to say that men don’t have it rough and the guy around 3:07 that seems to misdiagnose the disconnect between women and men. The whole “empathy is hardest for those in power” is largely based on the assumption that men as a group have power… Read more »
Had to look at it again, Dan. I’ve gotten so used to tuning that sort of hyperbole out that unless it is the entire tone of the conversation, I tend not to see it…but you are right. Does seem as if he was grasping at straws, purposely trying to, I dunno, defend women as if rote taught? It had nothing to do with women, and that is something that so many guys just do not get, and therefore feel guilt for just addressing their issues that they have to “white knight”. That is how deep the guilt and shame we… Read more »
I think that’s what gets me. When it comes to liberating women one of the main pillars of that is to define women independently of men. Yet when it comes to liberating men we are constantly blasted with messages that men need to be defined in relation to women. As women should just want men but men must need women (might explain why the folks around here hate the very concept of MGTOW so much). it was pure guy talk, about our issues, from real men (and by that I don’t mean “real men”, but not effigies of masculinity designed… Read more »
