Key Findings:
- New study reveals the relationship problems Americans are searching for help with most – and long distance tops the list
- ‘Distance in relationship’ had over 23,000 monthly searches, beating out ‘how to break up with someone’ and ‘sexless marriage’
- Relationship expert explains why physical separation has become such a widespread issue in modern romance
Love might conquer all, but it’s certainly not making relationships any easier. Whether it’s miscommunication, trust issues, or simply growing apart, couples today face a minefield of potential problems that can derail even the strongest partnerships. The rise of dating apps, remote work, and our increasingly mobile society has created new challenges that previous generations never had to navigate.
Now, a new study has revealed that long distance is actually the top relationship problem Americans are grappling with. Fantasy Co. wanted to explore which relationship struggles Americans are actively seeking help for online, and what this tells us about the state of modern love.
“What people Google in private moments of relationship crisis gives us incredible insight into what’s really happening behind closed doors,” says Anita Fletcher, a sex and relationship expert at Fantasy Co. “These searches represent real pain points that couples are experiencing but might not feel comfortable discussing openly.”
The study analyzed average monthly Google searches throughout 2024 for over 60 relationship-related keywords across all U.S. states, identifying the most searched issues nationwide based on total annual search volume. The research reveals not just what problems couples face, but how desperately they’re seeking solutions online.
Table 1: Top 10 Most Googled Relationship Problems In The US

1. Distance in relationship – 23,050 searches
The fact that distance tops this list with 23,050 monthly searches speaks volumes about how modern life is pulling couples apart. Remote work has scattered partners across different cities for career opportunities, while the rising cost of living forces couples to live apart temporarily. Military deployments, graduate school programs, and family obligations are creating physical gaps that technology can’t quite bridge.
“Distance searches have skyrocketed because we’re living in an era where love and logistics are constantly at odds,” explains Fletcher. “Couples are finding themselves choosing between career advancement and staying close to their partner, and that’s creating a whole new category of relationship stress.”
2. How to break up with someone – 21,290 searches
Coming in second with 21,290 searches, this query reveals something heartbreaking about modern relationships. People are trapped in relationships they know aren’t working but don’t know how to exit without causing devastation. The search volume suggests millions of Americans are desperately seeking guidance on ending partnerships gracefully.
“Breaking up has become more complicated in the digital age,” notes Fletcher. “You’re not only ending a relationship, you’re untangling social media connections, shared streaming accounts, and friend groups. People are searching for guidance because there’s no roadmap for clean, kind breakups anymore.”
3. Sexless marriage – 12,410 searches
With 12,410 monthly searches, sexless marriages represent a silent crisis affecting countless American households. These searches often reflect deeper emotional disconnection, stress, and the challenges of maintaining passion in long-term relationships.
“Sexual intimacy issues often reflect broader relationship problems,” Fletcher explains. “When couples search for solutions to sexless marriages, they’re looking for ways to reconnect on multiple levels. It’s about feeling desired, understood, and prioritized by your partner.”
Anita Fletcher, sex and relationship expert at Fantasy Co., commented:
“The dominance of long-distance relationship searches tells us something profound about modern love. We’re living through a unique moment where career opportunities, economic pressures, and life circumstances are forcing couples apart at unprecedented rates. Unlike previous generations who stayed in the same communities, today’s couples navigate love across time zones, dealing with video call fatigue and maintaining intimacy through screens.
“What makes this particularly challenging is that we’re the first generation figuring this out on such a massive scale. Previous relationship advice doesn’t account for the emotional toll of loving someone you can only touch through a phone screen for months at a time.
“These search patterns also reveal how technology has changed our relationship expectations. We expect to stay connected 24/7, but that constant digital pressure can actually make the physical distance feel more intense. The irony is that the same technology enabling long-distance relationships also highlights everything missing from them.”
