The winter months can carry quite a load of anxiety all around. You have the pummeling temperatures and loss of daylight, holidays with our in-laws, and to top it off, the annual New Year’s Resolution. As if punishment for hard work, traveling and enjoying ourselves, year after year we fall victim to setting new goals that will briskly fade away.
Personally, it comes as no surprise so many goals fall by the wayside. We’re fast-paced, straight as an arrow and need to be certain about most things we engage in. Keep in mind the idea of struggling is a frightening, if not unfathomable endeavor to stomach these days.
What’s not so surprising is the resounding amount of people who rise above their challenges each and every day. Let’s think about this for a moment. We wake up, tend to daily chores and do whatever is necessary to get by. Quantify that by 365 days a year and I would say that is pretty damn good.
Chances are you were very close to hanging on a limb and didn’t quit. The odds are you were faced with hiccups along the way, yet used your best judgment to skate by with flying colors. You believed in yourself when no one else did.
This to me is a reward and reason to celebrate all that is life and what it delivers. So in 2017 and beyond, our resolution should not be to tack on a new set of goals to measure accomplishments. Our resolution should be to make progress a priority.
Let’s be reminded of the challenges, the unknowns, and the unthinkable moments that tested us and we faced head on and will forever be better human beings because of it. That’s the New Year I’m looking forward to. It’s my reason to raise a glass. Cheers.
