A new study has revealed the most anticipated video game adaptations, and the upcoming movie Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has come first.
Multiplayer card game site World of Card Games gathered a list of well-known upcoming video game adaptations, using Google Keyword Planner to analyze each title’s monthly search volume. They ranked the adaptations, which include movies and shows, from highest to lowest searches to reveal the most anticipated titles.
In first place is the second movie adaptation, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, which gathers a staggering109,357 monthly searches on average. The sequel is based on the iconic horror video game and is set to be released in 2025.
It is speculated that the sequel, with the tagline ‘Anyone can survive five nights. This time, there will be no second chances,’ will continue the plot of the first movie, where Mike Schmidt takes a night guard job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and must survive the blood-thirsty animatronics that await him.
Mortal Kombat 2 is the second most anticipated video game adaptation, based on the gory fighting video game, and accumulates 65,525 monthly searches. This movie is the first sequel and is due to be released in 2025 too.
Developers of the sequel state it will be unpredictable and defy fan expectations by addressing the positive and negative reactions to the first film. It will also embrace the wildness and weirdness inherent to the Mortal Kombat franchise.
In third place, with 54,727 average monthly searches, is Return to Silent Hill. This adaptation is an upcoming movie based on the classic survival horror game series Silent Hill, which birthed iconic monsters like Pyramid Head. The movie adaptation is reportedly set to be released this year.
The adaptation will follow the main character James venturing into the town, after receiving a mysterious letter calling him back to Silent Hill, in search of his lost love Mary.
In fourth place is the Stray adaptation, with 31,150 searches a month. This title is based on the 2022 adventure video game, in which a stealthy stray cat is equipped with a drone and tries to survive in an underground dystopian city, facing robots and strange creatures. The animated movie has no confirmed timeframe or release date yet.
The second season of the wildly successful show The Last of Us, based on the action-adventure game, is in fifth place. HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama gathers an average of 30,839 monthly searches, and its much-anticipated second season is set to be released in 2025.
After the end of season one following Joel’s shocking decision that mirrors the game’s plot, fans can expect season two to follow suit. This potentially means a love interest for Ellie, new leads and villains and the tragic death of a well-loved character.
Until Dawn is in sixth place, as the title has an average of 19,078 monthly searches. This upcoming horror movie adaptation of the Until Dawn video game has not yet confirmed a release date, but recreating the creepy monsters in the game will likely take some time. A 2024 release is not in the cards, but 2025 could be the year for this title.
The movie’s plot will likely mirror the game, featuring a group of eight young adults struggling to survive on a secluded mountain while being hunted by a terrifying masked man.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes seventh place, as the title gathers 18,167 monthly searches on average. This action-adventure comedy adaptation is the third movie based on Sega’s video game series, featuring a star-studded cast with actors like Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey. Fans won’t be waiting much longer, as its release is set to be in December of 2024.
In the third movie, Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails must team up against a new powerful villain, Shadow, to protect the planet.
The Call of Duty movie has 17,867 monthly searches, despite no release date or news since 2018, when reports suggested that the director of Sicario 2, Stefano Sollima, would be directing the adaptation.
Ninth place belongs to the BioShock adaptation, with 17,359 monthly searches. This movie is set to be a Netflix original and is still in production, but unfortunately for fans, no release date is in sight.
The live-action movie will bring the underwater city of Rapture to life, and fans can expect the movie to closely follow BioShock’s iconic aesthetics and settings, mythology, rivalries and monsters.
The Ghost of Tsushima movie is the tenth most anticipated video game adaptation, accumulating 17,298searches every month. The premiere of the live-action movie is still unknown, but it has been confirmed that it will be directed by Chad Stahelski, who directed the iconic John Wick, and the script is officially complete.
Fans speculate the video game is perfect for a live-action, historical drama, showcasing the stunning landscapes and aesthetics you see in the game. Again, the plot is likely to follow closely to the game, with samurai Jin Sakai facing Mongol invaders in 13th century Japan.

A spokesperson for World of Card Games has commented on the findings: “Some of the most anticipated video game adaptations include sequels to popular franchises like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Mortal Kombat, both generating strong interest with upcoming releases. Horror adaptations, such as Silent Hill, are also highly awaited, tapping into the excitement for classic game-to-film conversions.
“Other titles like Stray and the next season of The Last of Us continue to build anticipation and have already created a significant buzz among fans.
