Yes, another write-up pleading with you to improve your sleep cycle for a more energetic and healthier lifestyle. The difference is, I am not an expert in Sleeping, nor am I a doctor. I am just like you, who has had a lousy sleep schedule for most of her 20s, and knows how big a difference it makes if I, for once, get a good night’s sleep! So it is all based on personal experience.
So to begin with, I am a light sleeper. Even a little disturbance here and there, and I am up all night struggling to go back to sleep. However, I am also a strong advocate for rest. Like, whenever you can, just rest. Lie down, take a nap if it comes, or just close your eyes and lose yourself to the sweetness of doing nothing every once in a while. It is also recommended for creative people. To take a few minutes out of your busy day and just sit in silence, without any distractions. It really helps the mind to be free of stress, overwhelm, overthinking and overworking. But still, nothing beats a quality sleep at night. Now what is easy for me to say is hard to achieve (even for me). And it took me a while to understand the relations of my whole day and what I do with a quality night’s sleep.
What Do You Do During the Day?
From this, I mean not just your activities, but also your diet. Even if you have already read many articles about nutrition and sleep quality, you need to experience it to believe. People say all kinds of things on the internet, but until it happens with you in real-time, you have the right to be sceptical.
Yes, a good diet during the day leads to quality sleep, which is indeed true. But it’s a half-truth.
Daytime Activities
From breakfast to dinner, taking a balanced meal is important. Hydration is important. And staying both physically and mentally active is also important.
Mental activity doesn’t just mean getting updates from social media, overthinking and chatting. It means to exercise your brain in creating something, even if it is work-related. You don’t have to turn into Picasso or an ISRO scientist to exercise your brain. Even doing your office work with focus will help a lot. This excludes your scrolling and content consumption, by the way. You already know that big business tycoons do not use social media much, and instead create more fortune through our submission to their capitalist ventures!
Binge watching or doomscrolling will take your dopamine levels to strange lows, and before you even realise, you will be in a slump that is hard to get out of. But not impossible.
Physical activity after you experience a slump will help you regain your mental strength through endorphins that are released during any kind of workout. Again, you don’t have to be an athlete or a gym member to be active. This is all a part of capitalism that sells you the services by glorifying such activities. With a hustling kind of lifestyle, a simple 20-minute walk in an open area will do the deed, given that you don’t use your phone or listen to any podcast. Just be there, walk in the moment. Maybe look at the sky in between or the trees if any are nearby you.
Once you get back your strength, you will notice a feel-good emotion glimmering inside you. It could be very small, but it will be there.
Yesterday, I experienced the same thing. I had binge-watched a show during the daytime and felt bad later. I went for a walk in the nearby park, just silently walking. Came back home and started to feel better. Started to feel like myself again, back in the game. I slept for 8 hours last night — Quality Sleep.
Today, I am writing, which hasn’t happened in a while. I thank the sleep quality for making me feel motivated and productive enough to do all the tasks.
Conclusion
If you wish to know my journey of coming to realise how a slow morning helps me win my day, please comment below. However, I do have the edge of being a freelancer to practise it. I know many of you reading this have a hustling lifestyle. And for that, I can only recommend (through experience), a 20-minute walk in nature, no matter when during the day. Feel the time slow down for you. It feels magical. I hope you can experience that magic. And try to get that energy drink- Sleep.
