A new study has revealed America’s loneliest states, with Vermont taking the top spot.
QR Code Generator analyzed data on the average number of monthly searches for 152 keywords related to loneliness in each state. The average number of monthly searches was measured against each state’s population size to determine the number of searches per 100,000 residents.
According to the study, Vermontranked as America’s loneliest state, with 114.98 monthly searches per 100,000 people. The state averaged 744 monthly searches around the topic, with terms such as ‘lonely’ and ‘how to make friends as an adult’ being the most searched.
Coming in second was Wyoming, with 104.52 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state recorded 610 average monthly searches, with keywords such as ‘lonely,’ ‘apps for finding friends’ and ‘I’m so lonely’ being among the most searched for terms.
Third in the ranking is Rhode Island, with 101.71 searches per month per 100,000 residents. Of 1,115 average monthly searches, the state’s most searched for terms were ‘lonely,’ ‘how to make friends as an adult’ and ‘feeling lonely.’
Alaskaplaces fourth, with 98.59 monthly searches related to loneliness per 100,000 people. Alaska recorded 723 average monthly searches, with phrases such as ‘lonely’ and ‘how to make friends as an adult’ being the most common.
In fifth is Delaware, with 95.08 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state recorded 981 average monthly searches, with terms such as ‘lonely,’ ‘how to make friends as an adult,’ ‘finding friends’ and ‘I’m so lonely’ being the most searched for.
North Dakota comes in sixth, with 95.07 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Of 745 average monthly searches, the most common search term was ‘lonely’ followed by ‘how to make friends as an adult,’ ‘I’m so lonely’ and ‘finding friends.’
Seventh on the list is Hawaii, with 89.42 monthly searches related to loneliness per 100,000 people. Hawaii recorded 1,283 average monthly searches, with terms such as ‘lonely,’ ‘how to make friends as an adult,’ ‘finding friends’ and ‘how to cope with loneliness.’
In eighth is New Hampshire, with 88.71 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state recorded 1,244 average monthly searches, with terms such as ‘lonely,’ ‘how to make friends as an adult,’ and ‘I’m so lonely’ being the most commonly searched.
Montana ranks ninth, with 84.82 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. Of 961 average monthly searches, ‘lonely,’ was the most searched for term followed by ‘how to make friends as an adult,’ ‘I’m so lonely’ and ‘finding friends.’
Landing the tenth spot is Maine, with 83.93 monthly searches related to loneliness per 100,000 people. Maine recorded 1,171 average monthly searches, with ‘lonely,’ ‘how to make friends as an adult’ and ‘I’m so lonely’ being the most searched for terms.
Mississippi was found to be the least lonely state in America, with 54.39 monthly searches per 100,000 residents. The state recorded 1,599 average monthly searches, with the terms ‘I’m so lonely’ and ‘how to cope with loneliness’ being the most searched for.

It’s clear from the data that there’s widespread struggle right across America, the top ten are made up of states from all corners of the country.
