On the Good Men Project’s Political Activism Social Interest Group’s convocast, moderated by Lisa Hickey and me, Carol Bluestein, we spent the first few minutes about the state of politics at the moment. As always, it was animated. Then we moved on to the continuing revision of the GMP Political Activism Platform.
We can Design our Future
Our excitement about this project is that it is about the future – about the world we want to see and live in, the kind of world we want for our children. It is a conversation of hope and a platform that says BMP believes in people and that people will create a positive future.
Sustainability and the Environment
Every week we have fresh input and we tweak the presentation. This week, our conversation focus on the absence of sustainability in our overview. One link led to another and I found myself at the UN Global Compact and I share this vision with you.
Ten Principles
The Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact are derived from: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Labour Organization’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, the Declaration on Environment and Development, and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
- Human Rights
- Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
- Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
- Labour
- Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
- Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;
- Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; and
- Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
- Environment
- Principle 7: Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
- Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
- Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
- Anti-Corruption
- Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
Green Behavior as a Gender Issue
The Scientific American reports Green Behavior is seen as unmanly. Recycling, reusing, and conserving resources is considered feminine while wanton waste is masculine. If men see themselves as the protectors of the family, why is it not an extension to be protectors of the planet?
Green Behavior as a Manipulation Strategy
This is not a gender issue. The article feels like an excuse so that half this country can say, “we don’t care about the environment,” and choose not to complain as executive orders and legislation tear down barriers to protecting our resources.

We want to hear your point of view. How important is green and sustainability management to you? To your children and your children’s children?
Is it really a gender identified issue? Is it manly to waste water, pollute the environment? Deny climate change?
Or has the oligarchy which controls the spin on fossil fuels perpetuated this fallacy? It serves their purpose to have men on their side. With that kind of support, they can continue pushing for legislation to dismantle environmental restrictions.
Have you been faced with the choice of going green or not? Have you been asked to protect our environment? How did you respond? How did it make you feel?
Your story is important to the conversation and has the power to influence others.
