The first time I realized I was drowning, it wasn’t in water — it was in my thoughts.
It was 2020, and I was sitting in my therapist’s office, staring at the clock. The second hand ticked louder than usual, each click echoing in my skull.
“What’s one thing you want to change?” she asked.
I didn’t have an answer. But I did have a list: anxiety, avoidance, anger. All start with the letter A.
The Breaking Point
It happened in a grocery store, of all places.
I was in the cereal aisle, staring at a box of granola when a wave of panic hit me. My chest tightened, my vision blurred, and I dropped the box. It hit the floor with a thud, and I froze.
A woman nearby asked, “Are you okay?”
I wasn’t.
For years, I’d been:
- Avoiding my feelings
- Apologizing for existing
- Aching for something I couldn’t name
But that day, in the cereal aisle, I realized: I couldn’t keep running from myself.
…
The Radical Realization
The turning point came a week later, during a Zoom call with my best friend.
“You’re always so hard on yourself,” she said. “What if you just… accepted where you are?”
That word — acceptance — stuck with me.
I started small:
- Acknowledging my anxiety instead of fighting it
- Allowing myself to feel without judgment
- Asking for help when I needed it
…
Rebuilding My Life with the Letter A
Phase 1: Awareness
- Learned my triggers: loud noises, crowded spaces, and unsolicited advice
- Discovered that 1 in 5 adults struggles with mental health — I wasn’t alone
- Realized that awareness is the first step to change
Phase 2: Action
- Created an “A-list” of daily habits:
✦ Affirmations: “I am enough”
✦ Activity: A 10-minute walk, no excuses
✦ Art: Doodling to calm my mind
- Started saying “absolutely not” to things that drained me
Phase 3: Advocacy
- Shared my story on social media, using the hashtag #AtoZMentalHealth
- Joined a support group where we focused on accountability and achievement
- Advocated for mental health days at work — and got them
…
The Science of Starting with A
- Studies show that acceptance reduces stress by 30%
- Action-oriented goals increase dopamine, the brain’s motivation chemical
- Advocacy builds community, which is linked to lower rates of depression
…
What the Letter A Taught Me
- Acceptance isn’t surrender. It’s the first step toward growth.
- Action creates momentum. Even small steps can lead to big changes.
- Advocacy builds bridges. When you share your story, you permit others to do the same.
