I was talking to a friend from the US. He told me he was going through a tough time with health and life. I replied with “take care.” In India, that means I care about you. Be safe. But he said it felt rude. That shocked me.
This is when I understood how much context matters. Words are not just words. Tone, place, and culture change them.
Some more examples. In India we say “What is your good name?” It is polite. In the US, it sounds odd because names are just names. Another one. In America people say “How are you?” but they do not expect your full life story. In India we often share more.
Even food can confuse. In some countries saying “I am full” is fine. In others it may sound like you are rejecting the food.
So how do we deal with this. First, remember that language is alive. It shifts with culture. Second, ask if you are unsure. A simple “Is this okay to say?” can save a lot. Third, give grace to others. If someone says something wrong, try to see the intent before judging the word.
I also posted this story on X. Many people replied with their own stories. They also faced cultural mix-ups. Some laughed, some shared pain. But all agreed that listening and empathy can fix most of it.
I learned one thing. Understanding each other is less about perfect English and more about patience. Words can hurt or heal. But meaning comes from the heart.
Next time I speak, I will not only think about words. I will think about where the other person comes from too.
That is the real “take care.”
