If you are my last lesson, then I hope the next one is everything I have been waiting for so patiently all my life.
Because you are the last lesson where I accept less than I deserve. You are the final time I abandon my own knowing to make someone else feel secure. The limit of how much of myself I am willing to minimise just to keep a connection alive.
This is the last time I find myself in the position of teaching an adult how to simply be, how to see the world a little wider, and how to meet life with the kind of curiosity and maturity I thought came naturally to people. This is the last time I make myself smaller on purpose, pretend not to understand something I understood immediately, play innocent to protect a dynamic that was never safe enough to be honest in.
This is the last time I lower standards that were never unreasonable to begin with, just perhaps too honest for someone who wasn’t ready to rise to them. The last time I accept effort that shows up only in the beginning, only when everything still feels new and easy, and only to quietly disappear once the honeymoon period decides it has done enough. And also the last time I stay with someone who isn’t a little moved by who I am, who doesn’t feel that quiet, wholesome pull toward me that makes someone want to keep showing up without being asked. Because if that isn’t there, what exactly are we doing here?
I am done keeping quiet just to avoid making a scene, sitting with the heavy weight of my own words tucked away because the alternative is friction. I am done constantly reminding someone of how to show up, watching my requests lead absolutely nowhere until the only option left is to use silence as a coping mechanism just to survive the day. I am done lowering my standards to fit into spaces that were never built to hold the weight of how I love.
I know I have a heart that feels like a lot to carry. My emotional awareness and my sensitivity can feel overwhelming to people who are only looking for something easy, something comfortable. Often, when people encounter a love that is this real and honest, they feel threatened. They call it too much, or too deep, because they are simply not ready to face their own fears or look at the quiet spaces inside themselves that need healing. It is always easier to walk away from a mirror than it is to look into it and change.
But I refuse to believe that my capacity to love fully is a flaw, and I have stopped fighting against the doors that fate has closed for me. If fate has a hand in the endings, then I have to trust it has a hand in the beginnings too.
I am certain there is a destined connection out there, someone who will love me for the exact same reasons others found intimidating. Someone who will look at the scale of my heart and decide to stay, no matter how hard the wind blows. Because hope is the one thing I refuse to give up on. That much I know.
The difference will be simple. They will not just tell me they want to be a better person. They will actually do the work to become one, because fate does not just bring people together; it aligns two minds that are equally ready to stand still in the storm. They will show up, day after day, without needing me to give them a map or a reason to try. They will want to be better, and they will prove it through their actions, not just their words.
If you are a lesson, I hope you are the last lesson where I accept less than I deserve.
Otherwise, that’s okay too.
I know I still have a beautiful life waiting for me. People who love me, dreams I want to chase, places I haven’t seen, and a version of myself I’m still becoming. I’ll survive this, just as I’ve survived everything else.
You will move on too. Perhaps this will become another relationship that simply didn’t work. For me, it will become the moment I stopped mistaking love for self-abandonment and finally chose myself instead.
But if you are that connection, if you are meant to be that destination, then I hope we choose to heal each other. I hope we can look past the armour we have both built up and understand that life is meant to be lived out in the open, not behind the walls of our defence mechanisms. If we are staying, then let it be because we are ready to actively choose each other through the friction and the quiet, matching each other’s efforts instead of waiting for the other to break. I hope we realise that building a home together means creating a space where neither of us ever has to shrink again.
If this chapter had to bring me to this realisation, then I accept the growth. I am looking forward with a clearer vision and a lighter chest. I am learning to trust the timing of my life, holding onto the quiet faith that all this patience is leading me toward a place where I am fully, unequivocally chosen, whether that means rewriting the story we are already in or saving my heart for the one who already knows how to stay.
