At least birds can fly away from this one You, not a bird, managed to fly away. You built this nest on the highest mango tree, making sure this one wouldn’t get knocked down by the war that flooded your streets. You found a lovely woman, had three mediocre kids, but your past life was something you’d always miss. My mom always told me myths about you, because once you got up and left you were an equivalent to La Llorona, el chupavabra, nothing new.
She’d tell me, “Ese hombre estaba con otra mujer, y se embarazo and when she found out I was pregnant too, she had an abortion.”
Ese hombre siempre me dijo, that man always told me, “first came my parents, then my siblings, then my wife and kids. And that’s how he’ll always see us Last. “ And I, a firm believer that the bird who built this nest would come. I argued back “Mi papá si me quiere ! And when I turn 15 he will be here, and when I have mi confirmación he will be here, and when I have this war stricken tree falling down on me, he will be here !”
Y mi mamá, pobrecita por qué, it took me 16 years to realize that she had the biggest wings, the biggest heart, and the biggest ambitions, but she laid on top of that nest, on top of those three eggs, held us tight as the poverty rose up to our necks.
Y mi mama, bien pobrecita, because it took me 16 years to realize
No matter the circumstances,
No matter the weather, that’s how she’ll always see us;
First.
