How to Stop Feeling Like a Fake at Work
Do you ever sit at your desk and think, “Soon, everyone will find out”?
Find out that you don’t really know what you’re doing. You’re smart, but not as super-smart as they think. That you just got lucky.
Your heart beats fast in meetings. You worry someone will ask you a question you can’t answer, even though you know the question. You work extra hard to hide your “secret.”
My friend, I have been there. That feeling has a name: imposter syndrome. And it is a liar.
I want to share with you the simple steps I used to quiet that voice. This isn’t just advice. This is your training plan.
Problem 1: Your Body Feels Scared
You feel nervous. Your shoulders are tight. You might even feel a little sick. Your body is acting like there’s real danger.
Solution: Trick Your Brain into Being Brave.
Your brain listens to your body. If you act brave, your brain will start to feel brave.
Your Training:
- Before a meeting, stand up tall for two minutes. Pull your shoulders back. Stand with your hands on your hips, just like a superhero!
- Smile. Even a fake smile tells your brain, “Everything is okay!”
- Take a slow, deep breath.
- Breathe in for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4
- Breathe out for 4.
Do this every day. It takes 120 seconds. You can do it.
Problem 2: Your Mind Only Sees the Bad
You make one tiny mistake and you think, “I’m a failure.” You forget the 100 things you did right.
Solution: Write the Truth Down.
You need proof that you are good at your job. So you have to collect it.
Your Training:
- Get a notebook. Call it your “Yeah, I Did That!” journal.
- At the end of every day, write down THREE things you did well.
- I answered an email quickly.
- I was nice to a coworker.
- I learned one new thing.
3. Read this list when you feel like a fake.
Your feelings are lying. Your journal is telling the truth.
Problem 3: You Are Mean to Yourself
You would never call your best friend “stupid” for making a mistake. But you say it to yourself all the time.
Solution: Talk to Yourself Like a Friend.
You deserve the same kindness as you give to others.
Your Training:
- Notice when you are being mean to yourself.
- Stop. Say the word “Cancel” in your mind.
- Now, say what a kind friend would say:
- Instead of: “I’m so dumb.”
- Say: “It’s okay. I am learning.”
- Instead of: “I messed up.”
- Say: “What can I learn from this?”
Be your own best friend, not your own worst enemy.
Problem 4: You Think You Should Know Everything
You are afraid to ask questions because you think it proves you’re a fake.
Solution: See Questions as a Superpower.
Asking questions doesn’t mean you’re dumb. It means you’re smart and want to learn.
Your Training:
- Your goal this week: Ask one question each day.
- It can be small. Just say:
- Could you help me understand this?
- Can you show me how you did that?
3. See what happens. You will notice that people are happy to help.
The only bad question is the one you never ask.
You Are Not a Fake.
You are a learner. You are growing. That feeling of being “a fake” means you care about doing a good job. That is a strength.
Use your new training:
- Stand like a superhero for 2 minutes.
- Write 3 good things in your journal.
- Talk to yourself like a friend.
- Ask one question every day.
You belong right where you are. One small step at a time, you will believe it.
Did you feel like a fake today? What one step will you try first? Tell me in the comments.
If this training plan helped you, please give it a clap so others can find it too!
