On Wednesday, POTUS sat down at the Oval Office with Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and the Majority and Minority Leaders of the House and Senate. Republicans, who held all of the leverage going into the meeting, were pushing for a debt-ceiling deal that would last for 18 months, meaning the government wouldn’t potentially hit its funding limit until after the 2018 midterm elections. However, the Democrats in the room—Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California—held steady on a three-month debt-ceiling increase through mid-December. Their proposal tied a stopgap bump-up in the debt limit to billions in Hurricane Harvey aid. Just hours earlier, House Speaker Paul Ryan had called the Democratic pitch “ridiculous,” but Trump apparently was sick of negotiating, and for reasons that are still unclear, sided with Schumer and Pelosi.
