Hey kids, in this video, I’m back again with my friend. Now, I hope we’re friends here. Yeah, it’s my friend Nick Bligh at my local Firestone, and we’re just going to pick his brain on something else, a different category. We’re going to talk about all the different warning lights that come on in your car. But first, I have a dad joke for you. So, my friend was struggling with a flat tire. I told him, “Don’t worry, no pressure.” I like that one better. That’s better than the other one. Okay, from a tire professional. Yeah, thank you for validating that.
So, anyway, today I want to talk about all the warning signs that come up in your car because those can always be scary. They still scare me. You know when the check engine light comes on, I’m like, “Oh no.” Or I’m trying to think of what’s the other one? The maintenance required? When those come on, but those are different. So, let’s just walk through them systematically here.
So, warning lights, your battery. When your battery warning light comes on because I know when you start up your car, usually, it goes through some diagnostics. You kind of see all these, but then when there’s actually something specific with the battery, that thing pops up. What should you do? So, the battery light comes on when the voltage, most cars, is going to drop below 12.6 volts, which means that your alternator is no longer producing enough electricity or any electricity in order to keep the car battery maintained and all the electrical systems running in the car.
Okay, so when your battery light comes on, it’s something that can leave you stranded because it’s just running just off of the battery now, and there’s no more replenishing of the voltage. Oh yeah, so it’s gonna keep draining down until there’s nothing left in it and could leave you stranded if you don’t go get it taken care of.
One thing I want to point out too really quickly because I think when I think of Firestone, I think most people think tires. Oh yes, and you guys have this Complete Auto Care because you can basically handle it. We do it all, right? Any and every vehicle out there is what, yeah, right? So, that’s good to know, right? When you think of Firestone, think More Than Just Tires.
So, let’s see what else do we have? So, brake light. When the brake light comes on, what do you do? So, the brake light comes on. It means that the brake fluid level has gone down in your master cylinder to the minimum level point, which means that either A, you have a leak, but more likely your brake pads are worn down to the point where you need to have your brakes serviced.
Airbag lights, one note I just got to say kind of a funny story about airbag lights. I remember when I put a cantaloupe on my front seat, it said, “Oh, the airbag,” yep, yeah. So, it’s sensing some weights and pressure sensors. Yeah, yeah, it senses the weight and tells you that the seat belt needs to be buckled. Yeah, yeah, put too many groceries in your seat on the line, right? Right. So, an airbag warning light, what’s that all about? I would think that airbags, what would cause them to go bad?
So, there are all sorts of sensors and stuff in the airbag system, crash sensors in your bumper and all that. So, the airbag light, when it’s on and you have your seatbelt buckled up, if you don’t, if you’re not buckled up, then the light will come on and tell you, “Hey, you need to buckle your seatbelt.” Right. Okay, but if the airbag light comes on, it tells you that there is a fault in the system, and more than likely, it is one of those crash sensors or something else. And when the light is on, there’s a potential that the airbag will not deploy if you are in an accident when it’s needed. Okay, good, all right.
So, coolant. When that light comes on, is there a coolant light ever specifically? Or I’m thinking, I know your… It’s hot, the temperature light is that, so you have two different lights. Okay, the majority of cars, yeah. One is telling you that the car is overheating, yeah, and that’s your overheat light. And then the other one is your coolant level light, so there’s normally two different lights. Okay, so it gives you usually a warning before you get… So, if your coolant level goes low, it’ll put on one light and tell you, “Hey, you need to pull over, check your coolant level or get it into a shop to have it checked out,” yeah, because that’s a major problem, and I’ve had that happen. Yeah, and if your vehicle overheats, you know, that’s a big issue, right? Right.
So, an oil light. And what if the oil light comes on? What does that usually mean? Does it mean it… So, if the oil light comes on, it means that it lost oil pressure, okay? And it could be a few different reasons. One, like, it actually lost all of your oil out of your car, so you don’t have any oil in there to give you any pressure. Or there is a problem mechanically inside. Either way, both times, if the oil light comes on, you need to pull over and shut off your car to prevent major damage to your vehicle, major damage. So, that’s why it’s important to get on that, right? Right.
And then check engine. Check engine light, when that comes on, that’s a variety of things, a variety of things. So, what would you do if I had my check engine light comes on? What do I do? So, Firestone offers a free code scan where you can pull it into the… Come into any Firestone, and we can pull the codes and scan it for free in order to see what system the fault is in. Oh, okay. And so they scan it for free. Is that… You know, I’m sure you’re busy. You got loads of cars there. Is that something that it is a fairly quick service? Um, appointments are always nice but not necessary. Okay, because check engines usually yikes. It just came on. I’ve got to get this. I need to get it figure it out right away. So, you do try to accommodate people by running out and doing that real quick. Okay, wait, what? That’s good.
Well, again, this is another helpful video for me. Um, taking your brain on things and some things that I thought I knew and maybe didn’t know as much as I thought I knew but some things to get confirmed that I maybe did know a little bit about some stuff. So, that’s good to note. So, thanks, Firestone, for partnering with me and allowing me to meet up with Nick. He’s a real good guy, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know you on a different level.
I hope this was helpful to all of you!
