I carry a lot of passion around what we put in and on our bodies. As a teenager, I battled thyroid imbalances and saw many doctors to get answers on how to fix it and what causes it. “Take this pill every day and come back in 6 months for another checkup” was routinely the only answer I could get from the Endocrinologist. That doesn’t feel right, and I set out to my own research and now continue that lifelong journey of lifestyle changes to better my health and wellbeing. At 26, I had kidney stones. The pain was burning, blinding and crippling. This propelled me further into good health and nutrition, and exploring what I was consuming on a more focused approach.
First, let’s talk about food. There is so much to be said about what’s good for you, what’s bad for you and everything in between. Basically, drink lots of filtered, intentionally loved water, eat organically & locally, eat meats from animals that were raised on loving farms, that were fed what they naturally would eat if they were in the wild. Cows eat grass, not corn. Chickens are not vegetarians. Do your research, try new things, trust your body and your own mind, not the nutrition and health guidelines we’ve been trained to believe are the only way to consume our foods and drinks. Be mindful of herbicides and pesticides, gluten, sugar and artificial sweeteners, and foreign chemicals that aren’t naturally needed for our bodies and minds.
Let’s do an exercise together: Write down everything that goes into your mouth, every day, for a month. I know, I know. That’s a lot of time and dedication.
Next, let’s assess what’s going ON your body because it’s just as important as what goes in it. Our skin is porous and absorbs everything we put on it and encounter. Take stock of what’s in your shower, your hygiene regimen, your laundry detergent, any soaps and other chemicals that come in contact with your skin throughout the day. Can you pronounce the ingredients? If not, it’s probably best to replace those going forward with simpler solutions. Think coconut oil for lotion and moisturizer, coconut oil + baking soda for toothpaste, apple cider vinegar for face wash, and so many more options to reduce the amount of foreign chemicals we come in contact with. Not only are these bad for our health, but they’re also bad for the health of our planet.
Now, I take no medication for my thyroid. I ceased use of antibacterial soaps and chemicals, I eat organically as often as possible, drink a plethora of water and use the simplest, most natural of ingredients I can. My health and wealth are all the better for it. What will you do today to better your health?
Consume intentionally,
