there I was, thinking with the brain when in reality I needed to whisper to my heart. often times, we think that there is something that is right for us, usually those moments are what sweeps us and hit us with the fact that our heart was not in it from day 1.
“Dare to believe that good things are possible when you follow your heart.” Bryant McGill
here are 5 lessons I learned when I started to follow my heart.
1.Feelings overcome thoughts when it’s time to chose what you do daily.
In March 2019, I decided to quit a good paying job to venture into becoming a Financial Advisor. Ever since I was a kid, I knew what I wanted to be — to be happy. That happiness was tied to helping people, deep down in my heart I knew that is what I am meant to in some capacity. It was a leap of faith I was willing to take and I did. the beginnings were brutal, going from steady check to 100% commission was not easy, I kept on pushing. 2020 was my best year yet and things were looking good, then I started to have second thoughts and had to come to a conclusion that even though i was helping people, I was a salesperson first and my heart was not into it.
I yearned something more, more meaningful, something of my own, something that my heart will be proud of despite of what my brain was shouting, so I left.
2. Your body ALWAYS tells you the truth.
It was my first taste of entrepreneurship at some capacity and I think I was doing okay enough to keep going month to month although my operating cost outweigh my income and creditors started to knock on my ‘’doors’’. my body started to ache, it was excruciating and no matter what I did to alleviate the achenes, nothing worked for months.
besides the income, I knew deep down that something needed to give up before my body forced me to give in.
3. Put things in Perspective.
I had to take a step back, my vision was fogged and my clarity became vague. I felt my heart detached from my purpose and unknowingly it was killing me. I went from purposely trying my best to help people but deep down I needed the sale so I can pay my bills, and that was not okay with me.
March, 2021 I decided to leave that career behind, I chose to free myself completely, I chose me and my sanity soon after that I took a trip to Dominican Republic to reconnect with my roots, to figure out what I wanted my life to be and look like, to sync my heart and my mind once again. to achieve the most fulfilling life I can ever achieve while still doing meaningful work to help PEOPLE. so I dived in.
“To be successful you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart” — Sr. Thomas Watson
4. Do not compromise what you’re passionate about.
although my life has been a rollercoaster most of my 20’s, I could not see myself any other way. to live a life with purpose is what I strive for and as hard as it can become, I cannot afford to compromise on my passion because my passion did not have a choice either, we came into the world to accomplish that mission and I cannot turn that down.
I just had to do it, and truly start the course to a life that fills the heart. for a very long time success for me was attached to the flashy things in life, the more I realize is that my true success will come from the impact and the influence my actions, thoughts and words can have in my community. live the life you love and love the life you live.
