Neuroscience and martial arts in action.
Eight months ago comic book writer Peter David had a stroke and couldn’t move his right arm. After extensive rehab work with Sifu Gus Kaporos of Green Cloud Kung Fu, doing Chi Gong (a traditional Chinese art focusing on mindfulness, breath work and movement) he has moved on to developing his hand-eye coordination through the use of sticks. In the world of neuroscience they say “what fires together wires together.” The brain and body are plastic, capable of being molded and adapted to their environment. In the world of movement that means “what moves together, grooves together.” And in the deepest sense, if you use it you really can re-acquire lost skills.
Gus and Peter’s work are a testament to the power of consistent practice and that ancient arts have a very real place in our modern world.
