What’s your weirdest
recent impulse purchase?
I suppose it’s possible you’re one of those sensible people who doesn’t “do” impulse purchases and who doesn’t own anything that does not have a clear and practical purpose in your life. That’s fine, I guess. Seems REALLY boring to me, but if you’re happy, I’m happy.
Needless to say, I am NOT one of these people. I like buying stupid stuff. And one of the best reasons I can think of to justify employment are the moments when you see something you don’t need, but WANT and you realize there’s no good reason to deny yourself.
Take for example the Gina Carano action figure pictured above. I own that now. I bought it when I did a recent Amazon search to see if her recent movie, In the Blood was available for purchase (which I fully intend to do, even though every review I’ve read for it has been brutal thus far). Turns out it wasn’t, but that toy was and–after briefly polling Twitter on the subject–I bought it.
The funny part is that I have less than zero interest in MMA–the sport for which she became famous enough to be thus immortalized in plastic. What I AM is a big fan of female cinematic badasses–a title she earned with her first starring role in Steven Soderbergh’s highly underrated 2011 action experiment, Haywire. The fact that it is entirely possible–and even likely–that this will end up being the only good movie she’ll ever appear in didn’t deter me in the slightest. It made me want it MORE.
Because of all the stupid things I buy, my favourite are pop culture artifacts that make other people go, “Someone actually made that?” Other examples in my collection include plastic versions of Winona Ryder, Andy Kaufman and the casts of M*A*S*H and V.I.P.. Amongst my holy grails are the toy versions of Ernest Borgnine (from The Black Hole) and George Carlin (from the Bill & Ted franchise), but even though Gina doesn’t rise to those heights, I definitely consider her a great get.
Can you top this in terms of random had-to-haveness? If so, I think you’re probably doing something right.
