What are your
favorite terrible songs?
There are some songs a lot of people hate that we adore and are able to passionately defend and justify. This post is NOT about those songs. These are the songs we love even though we know in our hearts they are as cheesy and terrible as their reputations’ suggest.
Here are a bunch of mine:
Okay, so those are a bunch of my fav terrible songs. You have to have some too! Now’s the time to spill!
I thought of the pina colada song as soon as I saw the post title. Seeing it already on the list means that all is right with the world haha.
3. Blackstreet, “No Diggity” Played this at our wedding 15 year ago. 5. Aqua, “Barbie Girl” 7. Avril Lavigne, “Sk8er Boi” 9. Ke$ha, “Tik Tok” Have these on a mix tape of “favorites” I made for the car. I also sing at the top of my lungs to “Get Out” by Jojo. Add “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” to my list. You can’t live on the Great Lakes an not love that song. I also hear “Brandy” on the radio often and find myself singing along with all of my heart. “But my love, my life, and my lady, is… Read more »
Poison by Alice Cooper also made my list. There is a video on YouTube called Boys Want Love by The Rockaholics that was in The Girls Of Spring Break video. Perfect 80s cheese.
I heartily agree with some of the choices here, including “The Pina Colada Song,” Bastille’s “Pompeii,” and “Ride Like the Wind.”
I’ll add a few of my own, for which I have been shamed over the years. JUDGE AWAY:
1. UB40, “Red Red Wine”
2. Los Umbrellos, “No Tengo Dinero”
3. Blackstreet, “No Diggity”
4. Montell Jordan, “This Is How We Do It”
5. Aqua, “Barbie Girl”
6. Los Del Rio, “Macarena” (Bayside Boys remix)
7. Avril Lavigne, “Sk8er Boi”
8. OMC, “How Bizarre”
9. Ke$ha, “Tik Tok”
10. Ini Kamoze, “Here Come The Hotstepper”
Also, I refuse to believe that anyone has ever requested a Frank Stallone song, regardless of what he called that album.
•”What Does the Fox Say” – I unironically enjoy this bizarre ditty
•”Surfin’ Bird,” The Trashmen – because bird IS the word
•”Jump,” Kriss Kross – is very catchy
•”Flushed from the Bathroom of My Heart,” Johnny Cash – the man had a way with words
•”Poker Face,” Lady Gaga – p-p-p-poker face p-p-poker face
Many of the terrible songs of which I am fond have their origins in the very early 80s (or sound like they do), when I was a little kid imagining what glamorous, soap opera-like lives adults must lead (and which I in turn would lead as a grown-up. I’m disappointed to say that adult life/romance did NOT live up to these fantasies 😉 Thanks a lot, Christopher Cross, Laura Branigan, Bonnie Tyler, Olivia Newton-John et al. Smarmy, soap-opera sounding crap that I will never, ever again admit to listening to: http://youtu.be/FQoDhKT7mRw Crush, Jennifer Paige http://youtu.be/PE3g2zeBVQQ Simply Red, Sunrise http://youtu.be/ur8ftRFb2Ac Christopher… Read more »
Okay my favorite terrible song is…
Okay it’s a tie.
1. Pompeii by Bastille
2. Blurred Lines
I don’t want to love either. Blurred LInes because of course it’s politically dicey. Pompeii because there are SO MANY annoying things about it but I love the words and the other catchy elements.
My kids even say, when Pompeii comes on, “Mom, you hate to love this song!”
Seconded on Pompeii! I absolutely love that song.
