Folks have questioned the timing of the release of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” – Mark Hamill even told Disney that “Solo” was being released too early, Digital Spy reported.
Why is the film being released just five months after “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”?
Perhaps it is because Disney knew that “The Last Jedi” was polarizing.
The first three Disney “Star Wars” films were all released in December, so this is a departure from the trend.
On the popular review site Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ score of “The Last Jedi” was 91 percent.
Audiences’?
Forty-six percent.
“Solo” gives fans disappointed in “The Last Jedi” the chance to get the bad taste out of their mouth as soon as possible. It allows Disney the opportunity for the narrative to be changed away from deep disagreements over the film to one where everyone can agree.
Fans can sing kumbaya over the Millennium Falcon and move on.
(Consider the first “Star Wars” standalone film, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. How many disagreements were there on that movie?)
The film should carry little disagreement because it’s just a fun adventure movie about a character that everyone loves. In this movie, large themes that can be divisive will not be explored like they were in “The Last Jedi”.
I do wonder how people who are in the middle on “The Last Jedi” debate and have attended Thursday night premieres of the past three films feel. Are they going to be the first in line again – do they have their tickets yet?
Also, how about those who opposed “The Last Jedi”? As has been talked about, I assume that they will come around, but if the moderates aren’t sure, I dunno.
