You may know about us because you are one of the 3 million people who come to goodmenproject.com every month to read our content. We’ve looked at the changing roles of men in the modern world, and how that affects all of the major issues of our day. Mental health and reducing the social stigma of talking about mental health is and has been a crucial area of focus for The Good Men Project.
It’s called “The Conversation No One Else is Having” for a reason—-no other media company in the world is talking about how men’s roles are changing and what the implications are.
The Good Men Project is a Participatory Media Company—we not only provide content you can read and share but we offer a multitude of ways you can actually participate in the all-important conversation about the changing roles of men in the 21st century. Now, we are ready to do much much more, with the announcement of the plan to roll-out Social Interest Groups and Task Forces. This is a transformative new initiative that will take our conversation to the next level by forming communities that are organized around particular issues.
Each Social Interest Group will have: (1) A clearly defined problem that we actually think we can help solve; (2) A clear group of people we want to change; and (3) A way of measuring results.
The groups will hold weekly phone conference call for one hour every week, so you can talk to other members of the community and share ideas. Then, in between calls, an email thread will connect the community and allow further ways of communicating with the other members throughout the week.
One of the most important subjects that our society grapples with is mental health. How do we attend to it? How do we cope when we or our loved ones struggle with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or PTSD? How can we best support ourselves and care for those we love? How can we shift away from a culture that stigmatizes mental health to one that openly addresses mental health as part of everyone’s general health?
This group – Men’s Mental Health – will examine the stigma and prejudice against mental health issues in our culture that often prevents us – and men in particular – from getting the support that they need, and will work to destigmatize mental health issues. Part of that work often includes the sharing of our own stories.
