Depends on your perspective, I think. Most masculinities place a high value on victory and overcoming obstacles; you can achieve any number of smaller victories over disability day-to-day, week-to-week, year-to-year. In the long run, though, an intractable disability could only be an exercise in failure, because you’ll never be as masculine as you might have been without it. My own auto-immune baggage sometimes turns simple tasks into monumental endeavors. Not so masculine. On the other hand, my tolerance for physical pain has increased to the point where medical professionals are often more uncomfortable while performing procedures than I am. Uber-Manly!… Read more »
