Sleep is vitally important to everyday functionality. Without proper sleep, everything from going about the workday to maintaining our personal relationships is likely to prove difficult and cumbersome. As such, we should all seek to enjoy a high quality of slumber. Unfortunately, for many of us, this is easier said than done during the swelteringly hot summer months. Excessively warm temperatures can make sleeping through the night an uphill battle and result in compromised sleep quality. With summer finally upon us, there’s no better time to get your sleeping space in proper shape for a lengthy stretch of warm weather.
Adjust Your Bed Frame
The closer you are to the ground, the cooler you’re likely to be overnight. Needless to say, if your mattress is fairly elevated, heat is liable to be an issue during the nighttime hours. This is where an adjustable bed frame can really come in handy. Placing your bed frame at its lowest possible height during the summer months can prove conducive to high-quality slumber.
Of course, if your current bed frame isn’t adjustable, you still have plenty of options. For one thing, you may want to consider sleeping on an inflatable mattress or Japanese-style futon throughout the summer season. Alternatively, if your bed frame is easy to take apart, placing your mattress on the floor and storing your bed frame until fall rolls around is certainly worth considering. You can also just bite the bullet and invest in an adjustable bed frame. Although high-end ones can get a bit pricey, most adjustable bed frames are affordable on virtually any budget.
Install a Dependable Ceiling Fan
Every bedroom needs a dependable ceiling fan. A good ceiling fan can keep you comfortably cool throughout the night and circulate cold air produced by your home’s AC. Furthermore, if you adjust your fan’s blades to turn counterclockwise, you’ll enable it to produce a downward-flowing cool breeze.
Given how many styles and sizes ceiling fans are available, finding one that’s perfectly suited to your bedroom shouldn’t present much of a challenge. For example, if you live in a farmhouse or older home, good rustic ceiling fans can make welcome additions to all of your bedrooms.
Hang Blackout Drapery
The sun can prove inconvenient in a number of ways throughout the summer. First off, the more sunlight is able to enter your sleeping space, the warmer that space is likely to be. While this can be somewhat convenient during the chilly winter months, excessive sunlight can make your bedroom downright uncomfortable over the summer. Secondly, since the sun tends to rise fairly early during the summer months, sleeping through the wee hours of the morning can be a tremendous chore.
This is where blackout drapery enters the picture. Blackout curtains, shades and drapes are designed to keep indoor sunlight to a bare minimum, which can prove tremendously helpful to those of us who enjoy sleeping in and people who keep unconventional sleep schedules. Furthermore, blackout drapery of the thermal variety can effectively seal in cool air and prevent warm air from outside from finding its way indoors.
Purchase Summer Bedding
Some of us have an unfortunate habit of using the same bedding year-round. Unsurprisingly, this stands to massively compromise our overnight comfort. Just as using lightweight bedding during the winter months can result in considerable discomfort, so too can using heavy, heat-retaining bedding throughout the summer months. So, if you don’t currently own any dedicated summertime bedding, now would be the time to correct this error. When shopping around for comfortable summer bedding, limit your options to breathable materials, like bamboo and silk. Furthermore, make a point of picking up some lightweight, breathable summer sleepwear to complement your new bedding.
Tackling the many challenges of the waking world can be an outright nightmare in the absence of a good night’s sleep. When it comes to creating the ideal sleeping space, it’s important to take the season into account. Just as bitterly cold temperatures can interfere with one’s slumber throughout the winter months, so too can brutally hot temperatures throughout the summer months. Fortunately, creating the ideal summertime bedroom is far from an arduous undertaking. Putting the previously discussed tips to good use can pave the way for a season full of comfortable nights.
