One of the most frustrating things about packing to move is figuring out how to pack awkwardly shaped objects in an efficient, space-saving way that also keeps them secure. One easy solution to this problem is to hire the best professional movers LA has to offer. But if you want to DIY your packing and moving, here’s a handy little guide on how to pack those weirdly shaped household items so they reach your new home in excellent shape.
Picture Frames, Mirrors, and Other Wall Hangings
Since these items are all highly breakable, it makes sense to be extra careful when you pack them so they are protected during the move. These items should either be individually wrapped in protective bubble wrap or can be stacked vertically in large boxes. As you stack them, introducing a layer of foam, bubble wrap or other insulation will reduce movement, and cushion them against each other, making damage less likely.
Bulky Power Tools
Power tools are expensive, and you certainly don’t want to damage your tools moving. Always remove any detachable parts from the tools, and wrap sharp edges carefully. You should also drain any oil or gas from any power tool that uses them to avoid leaks and spillages while you transport them. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to dismantle and drain your power tools.
Then pack the tools in a strong box, using packing material like packing peanuts, foam, and crumpled newspaper to fill up any gaps and provide cushioning. This will also prevent the tools from sliding around and colliding with each other. Make sure you label separate attachments carefully and pack all the accessories together so you don’t misplace anything.
Flat Screen Television
For TVs and other large electronic items, it is recommended that you keep the box it came in and use that to pack it if needed. However if you, like me, have long since thrown the boxes away, wrap your TV in thick sheets or blankets and wrap-around with strong tape to secure. Also, the TV should be one of the last things to be loaded in your moving van so nothing heavy is accidentally put on top of it.
Lamps and lampshades
The only practical way to pack lamps and lampshades is by disassembling them. Wrap each component separately in bubble wrap and pack into box. Also, remember to detach the bulb and wrap that separately. For taller lamps, you may need to purchase special boxes. It is also a good idea to stack in a nest and fill any gaps with packing fillers.
Other Odd Objects
There are many other things in our homes that defy conventional shape and size, like art sculptures, decoration pieces, etc. For all such dear and valuable objects, follow the simple rule of dismantling as much as possible, wrapping each piece in bubble wrap and securing with tape, then using a large sheet or blanket to wrap and insulate further.
What other odd-shaped things have you ever had to pack?
