From shark attacks to killer whales…stay tuned to number 1 to find out the truth about
00:05
10 of the most misunderstood animals in the world!
00:19
Number 10: Pigs.
00:21
I know, you’re probably surprised that I’m starting off with this creature.
00:25
But it’s honestly because when you think of a pig, you think of the dirtiest creature
00:30
on the face of this Earth.
00:31
And a creature that is only good once it’s fried up and in your stomach.
00:35
But in all honesty, pigs are very intelligent creatures.
00:38
I mean, there was a reason they became the leaders of Animal Farm, if you remember that
00:43
story.
00:44
Pigs are very smart, and they know how to interact with one another, as well as how
00:48
to know when something is wrong, or when something good is about to happen.
00:52
“But wait!” you cry out, “I’ve seen pigs roll around in the mud like slobs!
00:57
How can you defend that?”
00:59
Well, have you ever asked yourself WHY they’re rolling around in the mud?
01:03
It’s not because of messiness…it’s because of health.
01:06
As pigs lack sweat pores, they use the mud as a heat shield of sorts, to keep them from
01:11
getting too hot.
01:12
Considering how big pigs can get at time, I bet they get hot in the sun.
01:16
And that proves their intelligence, because they realize that the mud keeps them cool.
01:22
Number 9: Bats.
01:24
Oh yes, this is a classic.
01:27
Bats are usually associated with one of two legendary figures.
01:31
One is Batman, for obvious reasons that are for an entirely different list.
01:37
But the other, is Dracula.
01:39
Dracula, the legendary vampire that can transform into a bat and back to human form and likes
01:44
to suck people’s blood.
01:46
Because of his legend, and the use of him in various media, bats are often labeled “blood
01:51
suckers” and are to be feared at all costs!
01:53
But that’s not really the case.
01:55
In fact, bats don’t suck blood.
01:57
There is a vampire bat, but it’s not what you think.
02:00
In fact, when it comes down to the balance of nature, we actually owe bats our lives.
02:05
How so?
02:06
Well, bats primarily like to eat insects.
02:09
And they’re so good at catching them that they actually keep the insect population down
02:13
to very reasonable levels.
02:14
So be thankful when you see a bat, if you see one at all.
02:18
After all, they are nocturnal, and as long as you don’t spook one, it’ll just leave you
02:23
be.
02:24
Number 8: Crocs and Alligators.
02:27
Crikey, mate!
02:29
When it comes to crocodiles and alligators, you’re likely familiar with their antics on
02:33
various animal documentary shows via Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.
02:37
To be fair, crocs and alligators aren’t to be messed with.
02:41
As they will kill you, and there have been various cases of attacks on humans.
02:45
But, unlike what certain movies and TV shows portray, they’re not aggressive animals.
02:50
Or, at the very least, they won’t run after you.
02:53
They are very much first strike predators.
02:55
If you can get out of the way of their initial lunge, and get a few feet away from them.
02:59
You’re good.
03:00
Be aware of them, yes.
03:02
Be careful if you’re close to them, yes.
03:05
But overtly fear them when they’re hundreds of feet away?
03:07
Naw, you’re good.

03:17
Number 7: Cockroaches.
03:19
When you think about Cockroaches, you likely think about how hard they are to kill at times…or
03:24
how they can survive a nuclear explosion…which they can for the record.
03:29
You also think about the many myths that surround them.
03:32
Like how they LOVE to live in human homes, how they can spread disease easily, and stuff
03:36
like that.
03:37
There are over 30,000 species of cockroaches in the world, and guess what?
03:43
Only about a dozen or so like to live in human dwellings, as most prefer the outdoors.
03:47
Plus, while they CAN potentially pass a disease to a human, it’s via a set of circumstances
03:53
that are very, very, easy to prevent.
03:56
Not to mention that germs honestly don’t stay on them that easily.
03:59
If you want to kill a cockroach when you see it, ok.
04:03
Just don’t think you have to go through a decontamination process after you do.
04:07
Number 6: Killer Whales.
04:10
Who doesn’t like Shamu?
04:12
Or Willy?
04:13
Yet, Orcas are also known by a less flattering title, “Killer Whales”.
04:17
And while we all love Shamu, we don’t love the stories of whales harming their trainers
04:22
at places like Sea World.
04:23
But have you ever asked the question about why whales have hurt their trainers?
04:28
It’s because they aren’t meant to be in captivity.
04:32
Out in the open ocean, there have been only a few killer whale attacks, and those where
04:36
honestly accidents.
04:37
In most cases, orcas welcome humans when they’re in open waters.
04:41
So while whales are predators in their own right, and they can be killers, it’s not as
04:46
bad as you have been led to believe.
04:49
Number 5: Rats.
04:51
Ok, this one is tricky, because there are things that rats do that are very bad.
04:56
But, on the flipside, it’s not as bad as you think.
05:00
Most people think about the Black Plague when they think of rats.
05:02
And it is true that the Plague was carried by them, but not entirely by them.
05:07
In fact, it was the fleas on the rats that really caused the most damage to the population
05:12
of Earth.
05:13
Then, there’s the fact that they’re dirty creatures because they like to live in sewers,
05:17
feed off of trash, and so on.
05:19
Well, they live underground not because they’re dirty…but because they’re shy.
05:23
They just don’t like the spotlight, and they definitely don’t like the predators that are
05:27
waiting for them above ground.
05:30
In reality, rats are quite useful little creatures.
05:33
They’ve been known to make good pets, and can work well with others.
05:36
Besides, if rats were so horrible, then why did Pixar make Ratatouille?
05:42
I rest my case.
05:45
Number 4: Bees.
05:46
Oh yeah, bees have to bee…on this list.
05:52
For when most people see a bee, they freak out.
05:54
Granted, I freak out too, and when one got into my home recently, and I couldn’t figure
05:59
out a way to kill it without getting stung, I nearly lost my mind.
06:03
But the truth is, bees usually only attack people because you disrupt what they’re doing,
06:08
or you mess with their hive, which is always a big no-no.
06:12
Here’s a fun fact, bees and their stingers are connected in such a way, that when they
06:16
lose them via stinging a human…the bees passes away.
06:20
Yeah, it’s literally a one-hit thing, and then they’re gone shortly after.
06:25
So it’s for this reason that bees DONT go and attack humans.
06:28
Sure, there are some bees that have more of a penchant for it like Killer Bees, which
06:33
was actually an accident of science, but on the whole, bees just want to do their best
06:38
for the hive then do whatever else is required of them.
06:42
Number 3: Snakes.
06:45
Snakes…why did it have to be snakes…???
06:48
No, don’t get that reference?
06:52
Never mind, let’s just move on.
06:54
Snakes are very much a misunderstood creature, mainly because people focus on the facts about
06:59
snakes that are convenient.
07:00
Such as snakes are poisonous, and can harm you.
07:03
And they can…but only a select few.
07:07
Most snake bites will hurt like heck but they won’t do devastating damage.
07:10
In fact, just about 90% of all snakes bites happen because a snake was provoked by a human
07:16
either intentionally or unintentionally (like stepping on them accidentally).
07:21
I’m sorry, but if I get stepped on, I might lash out too.
07:25
When you really think about it, snakes are cool creatures.
07:29
Their long bodies are able to do wonders without the needs of arms and legs.
07:32
Their tongues can detect both prey and predators, and they have near perfect body control, allowing
07:38
them to appear to float in midair as long as they’re attached to something.
07:43
Like many animals on this list, if you leave a snake alone, it’s not going to hurt you.
07:49
Number 2: Sharks.
07:52
Cue Jaws music.
07:56
Yes, you tbhink of a shark, you likely think about Jaws, or The Meg, or Sharknado.
08:03
ut let’s be honest, if you think about those films, you have other issues.
08:09
Sharks are known to be the “terrors” of the ocean, and to a degree…that’s true.
08:13
But, when you look at the numbers…you see all that they DON’T do as much as what they
08:19
do…they’re very misunderstood.
08:21
First and foremost, sharks are fascinating creatures in the biological sense.
08:25
Their bodies were made to be apex predators.
08:28
Which you may think makes them outright scary, but that’s only if you’re a fish, not a human.
08:34
For example, hammerhead sharks can actually see in 360 degrees.
08:39
So nothing can sneak up on them, because they can see everything.
08:43
Mako sharks adapted their bodies to match one of their prey so that they can move faster
08:47
than them.
08:48
Great Whites have the ability to leap out of the water and launch themselves higher
08:52
and higher into the air…it’s incredible.
08:55
But here’s the key thing, most shark species aren’t aggressive.
08:59
Great Whites, Bull Sharks, Hammerheads, sometimes Mako’s, and maybe a few others.
09:05
But there are also Nurse Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Sandsharks, Whale Sharks, and other species
09:11
that are incredibly docile.
09:13
In fact, the three largest shark species in the world are non-predatory.
09:18
Do shark attacks happen?
09:20
Yes.
09:21
88 occurred in 2017, 5 of which were fatal.
09:25
But that’s it.
09:26
Given how society looks at them, you’d think they’d be happening by the hundreds, but that’s
09:31
just not true.
09:34
Number 1: Wolves.
09:36
It’s hard to argue that the most misunderstood animal in the world is a wolf.
09:40
Sure, Sharks are widely considered dangerous by many, but that’s honestly because of pop
09:45
culture more than anything else.
09:47
Wolves are considered dangerous by culture as a whole, as many legends, religious texts,
09:52
and even fairy tales use a wolf as a description of evil.
09:55
The Big Bad Wolf, the Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing, the Wolf Among Us, heck even The Boy Who Cried
10:01
Wolf…it goes on and on.
10:03
Now, if we’re being completely honest, yes, a wolf is dangerous, and it’s never a good
10:09
idea to provoke a wolf at any time.
10:11
But, just because they can be dangerous, doesn’t mean that they’re the bloodthirsty killers
10:15
that people make them out to be.
10:16
Wolves have good legends too, like Balto.
10:19
And there have been times where wolves have been just as kind to humans as they have been
10:23
mean.
10:24
In fact, fatal wolf attacks are very rare, if they happen at all.
10:28
From 1952-2002 there was a grand total of 3 in North America.
10:35
True, it’s said that in Asia there were 200, but that was over the course of 50 years,
10:41
which means there was a grand total of four a year on average, and that’s not a lot.
10:47
What’s tragic though is that these stories have led humans to think that wolves are such
10:50
monsters that they should be killed sight.
10:54
Wolves noticed this, and tend to go out of their way to avoid humans, knowing that if
10:58
they’re spotted, they could be killed.
11:00
Tells us what you think about these misunderstood animals in the comments below and…take care!
