We moved to our area a little over six years ago when our girls were still in full-time daycare. We looked at the schools but knew the area as a whole was pretty good and went with the place that fell in our laps.
The district we ended up being in was “the district” you wanted your kids to go to. The high school has the best sports program in the state. People move to the district specifically for it. Academically the schools are fantastic as well including an award-winning literacy program.
Since we have lived here the high school had to move up divisions because of the population growth. Many of the farm fields that are in district are quickly being sold off and housing developments are taking their place.
Our girls grew up and started school. They joined activities, loved their teachers and made great friends over the years. We stayed in our place the whole time. In the six years we lived there our rent only went up once by $25.
This past summer we had to move and faced the choice of staying in district or moving to another area and switching schools. In our search for a new place, we learned that we were getting one heck of a deal on our rent. If we moved in district we would be facing a 30% to 60% increase.
Buying wasn’t an option for us at that given moment because we were dealing with a time crunch. Houses were getting multiple offers over asking price and selling in less than a day.
We ultimately chose to stay in district. We are extremely fortunate that we were able to fit the increased rent into our budget by cutting a few other things. Our girls are flourishing at their schools and as someone who moved several times during her school years I didn’t want to do that to our children if we really didn’t have to.
The benefits of our girls staying at the schools are that they’re excelling and to us, that is worth the extra rent we are paying. When our time to buy comes we already know the choices and sacrifices we’ll have to make if we want to continue to stay in district.
