Humanism or humanistic psychology is a type of psychology that hopes to understand more about human behavior. In this psychology, a person is thought to want to achieve and this has a lot to do with their own successes and failures. It is also thought that a person’s environment has a large impact on how they behave.
Using Humanistic Psychology to Your Advantage
There are a few ways that you can use humanistic psychology to your advantage. One way is through the use of therapy. You can meet with a therapist in order to discuss things that are taking place in your life or to help you with a mental health condition.
When you decide to work with a therapist, they will be able to aid you better when it comes to understanding what this type of psychology covers and how you can use it to your advantage. In other words, they may be able to help you determine how you want to spend your time.
Self-Actualization
One term that relates to humanism is self-actualization. This is the idea that you are able to work through things without focusing on specifically meeting goals. Instead, you may grow as a human being, instead of just meeting specific marks that you place on yourself.
For instance, instead of trying to meet a exact goal, you may decide that you want to be happier or live in the moment. Operating this way may also help you do other helpful things for your outlook and health.
Taking Care of Yourself
When you are on the road to self-actualization, you may decide that you want to take care of your health better overall. Consider these ways of doing just that.
- Visiting Your Doctor. It is generally a good idea to visit with a doctor if you haven’t done so in a while. They will be able to give you a clean bill of health and if there is something that needs to be treated, they will be able to talk to you about that type of thing as well. Being sure that you are in proper physical health can sometimes give you a lot less to worry about.
- Talking to Your Therapist. If you have a therapist that you work with, you can talk to them about your journey to self-actualization as well. They will be able to speak to you about what you should be doing. If you do not have a therapist, you may want to think about finding one to work with.
- Eating Right. Cleaning up your diet a bit may help you in many different ways as well. You should try to eat a balanced diet, where you treat yourself a little bit, but are also getting all of the nutrients that you need as too. These things can help your brain function and allow you to be able to make decisions.
- Sleeping. It is necessary to sleep the proper amount at night as well, so you can keep your brain sharp and able to handle what you need to do each day. When the brain and body aren’t allowed the proper time to rest, this can be problematic in a number of different ways.
- Exercising. Another thing to try on your journey to self-actualization is exercising. Get moving a few times a week and see how you feel. You might notice that you have more energy and endurance after a short time, with consistent exercising.
- Taking Time to Relax. You may have a large number of things to do each day, but this doesn’t mean that you don’t have time to relax. When you are feeling like you want to pull your hair out, take a few minutes to yourself to slow down and relax. This may prevent you from becoming burned out and can offer you a small break to process things.
Conclusion
Humanism is a type of psychology that focuses on the client and not their specific behaviors. This is something to talk to a therapist about if you are interested in how this type of therapy works. With this approach, a person is able to focus on their life and thinking, instead of simply trying to meet goals.
There are other ways that you can approach what is known as self-actualization as well. Try to incorporate these things into your life and see how you feel about yourself and your life. You might notice that these things help you along the way. The good news is that you can change whatever isn’t working, and you can always talk to your therapist about how to make some of these changes.
Whatever you do, remember to ease into it, so you don’t become overwhelmed. As with many new things, there is a learning curve. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t approach humanism and reach self-actualization if this is what you want to do.
