I loosely tie my hair
My bun unable to wrap in it
All the bristly threads
I try to look casual
Unconcerned, unkempt
Then I see you
And I realize
Should have put more time on me
So I slyly move my hand
To my unkempt, bristly
Strands of hair
Neatly tuck them behind my ears
And I say to myself
“Yes, I am ready now.”
Though I know
I should have paid more attention
To my unkempt, bristly hair
Just like I spent hours
Choosing the best fitting shirt
To hide my flab
But now I’m here, you’re here
And I’m worried
“Ma’am, your coffee”
I turn my head around
Only to realize
You, who made me conscious
Were not there
So I smile,
Loosen up my hair
Brush off the self-doubt
Take a sip of my coffee
And look up
Only to see, you’re back here
Oh! and I think to myself
I shouldn’t have let loose
My bristly strands of hair.
