A Visit From Hindsight

She meant to come Now
She meant to come Then
But a vague promise never turned into a When
Finally, Hindsight, my closest friend arrived
And gifted me with a ancient mirror
In it I saw a reflection of my mind
All the memories I had filed away
Now each letter came out to play
Words and scenes met each other
And made a larger picture I had never seen
Everything I thought was true
Transformed into a journey
Into a vision
Into a finality
Of what was authentically true
I was horrified
I was comforted
I felt small
I felt empowered
But I was not especially concerned
With how I felt or what I thought
I was only focused on seeking the truth
The truth came with a vengeance
Years of waiting to unfold
Fed a momentum that left me breathless
People I thought didn’t care
Now I could see how they loved me
People I thought I could never lose
Were shown to be lost all along
My identity was shattered
But a new one took hold
And as I grew accustomed
To the discovery
To the mystery
To the beauty
To the horror
To shading my eyes from the sheer enlightenment
My friend had to leave
And her mirror did not work without her company
Hindsight was gone
And I was alone
The truth was known
And now I sat with it
The excitement of exploration
Had helped to distract
From pain
From loss
From confusion
From who I loved
From who loved me
And now I had no distraction
No new hindsights
Only the truth
And presence of its sting
Hindsight is my closest friend
When she visits
Her words are few
But as they are perplexing
They are also powerful
I saw visions that were not a dream
But instead the truth
And as much as they hurt
I am grateful for the growth
Hindsight is my closest friend
And now I finally know enough.
May our pain teach us
What light alone never could.
