Are You Buying Your BS? It’s like we can’t stay away from the store. We’re distracted by all the shiny new gadgets and gizmos, and we have to have them. Even when we know, we can’t afford to make another purchase we reach for the credit card to charge it.
Before we know it our credit card is maxed out, and we don’t have the funds to pay off the debt. When the debt-collectors begin calling, we wonder, “what happened?”
I’m using a financial metaphor to talk about self-sabotaging behavior, but it works when applied to our mental health too.
Time to Improve Your Credit!
Recently I was interviewed on the Shek Check podcast, and during the conversation, the host asked me to explain how yoga and meditation helped me to overcome addiction and help combat symptoms of depression.
I was reminded of the paraphrased quote above, “Become comfortable with uncomfortable things.”
If we want to overcome our struggles and cultivate positive mental health, we have to get comfortable with uncomfortable things like facing those debt-collectors. Initially, it’s going to be difficult, but over time the long-term payoff is enormous.
Celebrate the Wins
Now, I’m not saying that we need to jump right into the deep end and face our demons head on but what I am suggesting is to take one small step today.
Make the phone call that you’ve been putting off, schedule some time to get outside and to take a walk, before you get out of bed enjoy a few deep breaths, or maybe even take a class on a subject that interests you. This process will look different for each one of us, and that’s totally okay.
It’s so easy for us to get caught up in the negative monkey mind and to compare ourselves to others. Just stop it. The important thing is to do something small for yourself and then celebrate the win. All these small steps will add up to something amazing and you, my friend, are amazing!
What small step will you take today?
