Today, let’s discuss one of the significant challenges of being an extremely principled, “live or die by what it IS” kind of person. This type of person is disciplined in consistently doing what they believe is right and seeks to understand their own shortcomings or potential sabotages. The moment they grasp the reason behind doing or not doing something, and it aligns with their values and deepest beliefs, they just switch. Bam. “And then I just did.”
If you resonate with this, you’re likely one of the most purpose-driven and successful people you know. You take high performance, self-growth, being a multi-passionate, multi-talented go-getter, and relentless follow-through to the next level. You’re the kind of person who, if they say they’re going to do something, does it. Day in and day out. No matter what. The end!
But also, well, hm. You are easily distracted. You have plenty you do not follow through on. You sabotage. You have or have had unhealthy and possibly extremely self-destructive habits. Certain things you either can’t seem to kick or alternatively can’t seem to pick up no matter how much you think, pray, journal, or try to overcome it. As a principled person, it’s infuriating! I know. Irritating in the extreme, right. You just want to understand it because if you understood it, you could fix it!
Except.
And except.
And except.
There are certain things where it is as simple as:
Because God said so.
Because it’s not good for you.
Because it’s derailing your destiny.
Thinking you need to know, figure it out, fully get it in order to address it is the deception itself.
This morning as I spoke with Craig and watched my sons practicing at Jujitsu class, I pondered this, the scripture in Romans came to mind where Paul laments, “I keep doing the things I don’t want to do, and those I should be doing I don’t do.” Why do you think God had that put in the Bible? So we can feel better about the fact that “even Paul” struggled with sin? Or because it is simply the human condition (yes, even for those who God greatly calls and even for those who live a life of surrender and submission to that call) to be deceived or to be led by the flesh. I want to clarify here, because I can here some of my readers question the word “sin.” Sin is nothing more than not hitting the mark, it is a sign of a need of correction. Sin happens all the time, we are blind to the majority of it,.
The scripture doesn’t go on to say that Paul then analyzed his sinful tendencies until he fully figured out why or discussed the situation with his friends to get the latest strategies for being disciplined. The whole point of this scripture is … he didn’t know why! He wanted to act differently and he didn’t!
This relates closely to the principles of the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction teaches that our thoughts and beliefs shape our reality. Often, our sabotage or disconnect occurs because we don’t feel a clear direction. “If I knew what the direction was for me to get through this, or charge forward with this, I’d do it!”
But the Law of Attraction reminds us that what we focus on expands. If we focus on confusion and self-doubt, we attract more of the same. Instead, focusing on clarity and alignment with our true values and purpose brings those things into our reality. Looking to the left or the right, trying to figure everything out, only leads to more confusion. Staying focused on our true path brings clarity and direction.
The thing with being one of the driven ones, one who so desperately yearns to know and to walk in alignment with the universe, is there is a danger of leaning on our own so-called wisdom to do this. If ‘I’ can figure out, understand, get, be strong enough. But the Bible tells us to lean not on our own understanding. To submit to God always. To acknowledge Him in all things. And that He will and is, as a child of God, directing our paths (Proverbs 3:5–6).
Want to know what else it says in Psalms 1:6?
He blesses our way as we walk forward.
Not as we stop and turn every which way to figure it out
He also says that if we are His child, we are led by His Spirit (Romans 8:14). Not ‘maybe/sorta/if.’ So when in doubt, confused, directionless, adrift, or you just can’t seem to get it together and get moving, know that you are being guided. Look to the higher power within you. Know you are being led. Reform your need for seeking understanding outside of this inner guidance. And walk forward.
WALK FORWARD.
After all, the thing you decided to lean on is no longer your own principles but the higher guidance within you.
