Micro-expressions are those tiny, involuntary facial movements that last less than a second, and they happen before someone has the chance to consciously control their reaction. They reveal what that person is really feeling at any given moment, so some believe that if you can catch and interpret these flashes of emotion, you will be able to separate your real friends from the fake ones.
You must admit it is a pretty intriguing idea. Is it reliable, however?
The science
- The science suggests that the power of micro-expressions lies in the fact that when someone is caught off guard, their face will briefly betray their real emotions before they can consciously override it. Therefore, when you unexpectedly run into a friend, their immediate reaction just before they put on a polite mask can tell you what they really think of you: genuine warmth or mild annoyance that they have to pause their day to engage with you.
- Micro-expressions, particularly expressions of negative emotions, can help us differentiate between truth-tellers and liars regarding any future malicious intent. That the expressions actually stem from a “tug of war” between voluntary and involuntary facial control mechanisms, thereby making them difficult to suppress whenever deception is involved.
In theory, it sounds like a social superpower because if you can catch these expressions and interpret them correctly, you have an unfiltered glimpse into people’s true feelings all the time.
“So, some believe that if you can catch and interpret these flashes of emotion, you will be able to separate your real friends from the fake ones.”
The catch
- People’s faces react for many reasons, so a flicker of surprise or tension doesn’t necessarily mean someone dislikes you. They may be just lost in some unpleasant thoughts that have nothing to do with you or are simply adjusting to the sudden social interaction. Misinterpretations in such cases can lead you to doubt genuine friendships.
- In real life, micro-expression reading requires skill because it is really not that straightforward, so even experts require extensive training to be able to interpret them accurately. For the average Joe, catching a half-second grimace may just lead to overthinking.
- People’s consistent behavior tells a better story. So, for someone who always supports you, checks in on you, and is there when it matters, they are most likely a true friend regardless of what you think their half-a-second facial twitch might have shown in an unexpected moment.
- Finally, we all have bad days. So, if you surprise us and, for a split second, we look irritated, it doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t like you. It could be that we are just exhausted, preoccupied, or in a bad mood as a result of something that has nothing whatsoever to do with you. Reading too much into our fleeting expressions can create unnecessary doubt in otherwise solid relationships, which is more tension than we need.

So, should you still pay attention to micro-expressions?
Short answer, yes, but with some caution: if you notice a pattern where a person’s initial reaction to seeing you is usually negative, then it is worth considering, but it bears repeating that you shouldn’t let a moment of surprise outweigh years of friendships.
True friendships cannot be disproven in a millisecond, they are revealed over time through actions and patterns of behavior. Sure, micro-expressions can be fascinating, but don’t let them solely dictate the fate of your friendships. The bigger picture always tells you more.
