During our new Environmental Social Interest Group (SIG) weekly teleconference, we talked about how we can reduce our impact on the environment with smaller gestures that reduce big impact. Like most of the members of the Environment SIG members, I have been environmentally aware since I was 10 years old, and have been an activist on and off since I was a young teen. Like most of the members of the Environment SIG members, I have been environmentally aware since I was 10 years old, and have been an activist on and off since I was a young teen. Still, I have had habits that were contrary to my values. One such contradictory habit was my use of a disposable drinking container with a lid and a straw. It was when I first viewed this video of a sea turtle with a drinking straw stuck in its nose that I committed to stop using straws.
I already recycle, but I became aware that I was not pre-cycling as much as I could. So, I stopped buying soft drinks at quick stop stores as I used to. No, my effort alone may not reduce the impact of plastic litter significantly. However, now that I have shared this blurb about it and you thoughtfully consider how you can reduce your plastic consumption, the sum of our combined effort will have a bigger impact toward a healthier planet.

One of the goals of the group is to help people think about environmental issues in terms of every-day living, incorporating awareness into decisions that motivate our actions. Here are a few writing prompts related:
- Tell the GMP readers about an environmental activism project that is physical exercise.
- Tell the GMP readers about your experience with teaching youth about nature related to an outing.
- Introduce the GMP readers to an “every day” environmental hero you know personally or through research.
- Or, tell us about how YOU, yourself reduce your impact on our environment.

Tell GMP Your Environmentalism Story!
Here is a previous Call for Submissions related:
Plastic Bags – A Call for Submissions
We use plastic bags almost every day, but only for 25 minutes. Then, the bag will take 100 to 500 years to break down. Tell our readers why Plastic Bag-free Day is so very important.

The Good Men Project is different from most media companies. We are a “participatory media company”—which means we don’t just have content you read and share and comment on but it means we have multiple ways you can actively be a part of the conversation. As you become a deeper part of the conversation (Which really is “The Conversation No One Else is Having), you will learn all of the ways we support our Writer’s Community—community FB groups, weekly conference calls, classes in writing, editing platform building and How to Create Social Change.
