Even though another Earth Day observance is long gone, environmental concerns persist about our global planet. As a result, environmental preservation must remain at the forefront.
Earth Day should not be the only time that global citizens unite to protect our planet. Instead, consistent efforts should be made to teach all human beings, both young and old, to be good stewards of the Earth.
Here is a list of ways that parents can help their children build their capacity to protect our environment.
- Mothers and fathers should help their boys and girls develop an appreciation for outdoor spaces at their earliest beginning. Family activities like taking walks in the park, visiting lakes and oceans, and hiking trips help children to develop environmental mindfulness. These and many other activities help boys and girls develop an appreciation for our Earth.
- Parents must also be willing to make environmental discoveries with their families. Whether it’s collecting leaves or rocks, picking wildflowers in a lush field, or searching for unique insects in a mound of dirt, children must learn about the complexities of nature. Since I believe parents are their child’s first teachers, they should do their part to teach their sons and daughters about the environment.
- Conservation and recycling ought to begin in the home. Things like composting, reducing the consumption of plastic, relying on natural light indoors, and controlling the use of water, natural gas, and electricity are among some of the ways to protect environmental resources. Other ideas include repurposing leftover foods and household items. Doing so will teach children both valuable and sustainable life lessons related to caring for the earth without being wasteful. These habits will remain with them throughout adulthood and propel them to willfully serve as guardians of our planet.
- Mothers and fathers should help their children to develop an appetite for plant-based foods and beverages. They should also use plant-based household products at home. Most simply stated, consuming plant-based products will help reduce the impact of climate change and preserve water as greenhouse gases are reduced.
- Trees play multiple environmental roles. This vegetation does wonderful things like producing the oxygen necessary to support life. Trees also reduce the negative impact of flooding by absorbing excess stormwater. These functions reduce runoff water from storms, land erosion, and water pollution caused by flooding. Therefore, families should engage in annual and periodic activities related to planting trees.
- Home gardening also shares many of the environmental benefits associated with tree planting. But gardening helps to reduce all costs, including those associated with transportation, that is related to agriculture.
- Efforts should be made to save fuel. Families should enjoy walks and bike rides instead of exclusively relying on their trucks and cars. For example, if a grocery store is within walking distance, frequent walking visits can be made. Public or mass transportation should be used as much as possible, too. Here is another example. This form of transportation can be used for traveling to and from one’s place of employment.
- Children must be taught the importance of eliminating pollution from the environment. This biggest lesson must come when parents teach their sons and daughters not to litter. And mothers and fathers must lead by example. Families need to be good stewards of the earth by helping to keep it clean. Among these includes waterways. Whether it’s positioning a trash can outside of the home so those who pass by are able to discard their debris, collecting trash on the neighborhood streets as a family, or safely working in organized groups to clear the riverbanks of garbage, much can be done to reduce pollution in our environment.
The Final Word
We must honor the Earth by taking care of it. The future of our planet rests in the hands of humanity today.
Earth Day must be every day.
