Getting older is a challenge for everyone these days. The obsession with youth can only take you so far. You will eventually reach your fifties and sixties if you’re lucky. By the time you reach your forties you need to have a regimen in place to offset the slow but steady change in your body’s hormonal balance.
The body starts losing its muscle tone. Loss of balance may become an issue. Bone density starts decreasing. Diseases related to chronic lifestyle choices such as overeating or drinking begin to show their claws. Chronic injuries or exposures can also play havoc with our health over the years. Smoking once seen in movies as harmless in media of the period has been revealed as a leading cause of cancer and lung disease.
Getting old is not for the weak. If you don’t have the stomach for the infirmities of old age, there is only one solution. You have to work out. You have to see a doctor to make sure everything is working the way it should. You have to start considering everything you put in your mouth more seriously than you did in your twenties.
Senior citizens are rapidly becoming one of the largest and most expensive members of our society, many due to the poor care they took of their bodies in their youth. It doesn’t have to be that way for you, if you plan ahead.

We want your story: Have you started engaging in a fitness regimen you think you can take with you into your senior years? What do you do? Weightlifting? Boxing or some other martial art? Hot box yoga? Share with the class. Tell us what you think of your exercise regimen and how dedicated are you to it?
What about your neighborhood? Has legislation regarding smoking or some other public hazard reached your city or town? If so, what was the reaction of most of the citizenry there? Was there resistance or quiet acceptance?
Are there other harmful social activities in your community that were once considered mundane? Do you miss them? Is there something you would outlaw if you could? Why?
When you’re ready to submit, click the red box, below.

Good questions Thaddeus. I’ll be 75 next year and feel pretty damned good. But you’re right, when we hit 40 we have to begin making a serious commitment to our health or given the unhealthy society in which we live, we’ll start going down hill. Here are the things I’m doing: 1. Join a men’s group for camaraderie, care, and support. I’ve been in a men’s group that has been meeting regularly now for 38 years. 2. Eat well. I follow Michael Pollan’s advice. “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” 3. Exercise. I walk everywhere I can, which is… Read more »
