That’s what life is all about, right? Being in it to win it? It is for me and I hope it is for you too because there’s a great wide world out there just waiting to happen for you. Goal setting has been a habit of mine for years. I get a hair brain idea, say I’m going to do it, then figure out how to make it happen. It’s really that simple and I’ve had some of the most amazing experiences of my life because I said, “ya know, I’d really like to do that some day” or I’ll see someone else doing something and think, “I can do that too!”
It can be something as simple as waking up at 5:30am and going for a run. It can be going to sleep early. Or it can be as big as traveling the world, doing a 50 mile run, an Ironman, or some other physical feat.
There are a few main categories when it comes to goal setting. For me, they are physical, health, emotional, relationship, family, career, finance, and legacy. You can create your own categories and begin goal setting immediately. It is a very important part of anyone’s success. Set a goal, create a plan, put that plan into action and see if you can blow your goals out of the water!
You’ll begin to notice that once you proclaim your goal, the universe starts conspiring to make it happen. Obviously, you have to do the work, but certain people will begin showing up in your life and certain opportunities will happen that didn’t seem to even be possible just moments before.
I recommend when you set your goals, you make short term, medium term, and long term goals for each category. You can begin with each day, week, or month, but eventually it’s great to have annual goals, some 3 year goals and 10 year goals. At lululemon, I was introduced to the idea of a BHAG, or Big Hairy Audacious Goal. Definitely create one of those and make sure it excites you! Make sure it’s beyond what you think is possible at the moment and start watching the universe provide for you.
Your goals need to be written out, stated in the first person, and present tense. There also needs to be a date when you’re committing to achieving your goal. For instance, I am an Ironman finisher by December 31, 2017. The possibilities are limitless. It’s always a fun experience when you set a goal and as you begin your plan, you realize that you’re going to knock it out of the park!
There are a ton of tools on the internet to help you get started. Brian Tracy has a free goal setting toolkit. And recently, I’ve been watching a guy named Gary Vaynerchuck on Youtube. He has a company called Vaynermedia and it’s all about entrepreneurship, working hard, and marketing in the age of social media. Think Mad Men for Modern times. He has said if you ever see him at an event definitely go up to him, say hi, and take a selfie. The photo above shows you exactly what I did.
So whether it’s meeting a mentor, running a race, or bringing your family closer together, the world truly is your oyster. Good luck and enjoy the unknown! As always, I’m here to help anytime @teddymcdonald
