Not content with blackballing Colin Kaepernick (and free agent safety Eric Reid), NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and a majority of team owners agreed on a new policy this week that forces all players who are on the field during the anthem to stand and “show respect for the flag.” Players have the option of waiting in the locker room during the anthem, but will be fined if they protest in any sort of public way. San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York abstained from the vote, and New York Jets Chairman Chris Johnson said he would pay any fines players incur for protesting, but pretty much every other owner was in favor of the rule change. The NFL Players Assn. released a statement making clear that it wasn’t consulted prior to the NFL’s announcement and will “challenge any aspect” of the new policy that’s “inconsistent with the collective bargaining agreement.” Over the last day, “NFL + National Anthem” has a 37 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
