I was the day before. All my life I’ve been the odd one out, the only African American in a white school, the Australian kid “with the accent.” I’ve grown to embrace my differences and learned some people will love you for being different and others will try to shoot you down. I’ve faced the challenges of being different with run-ins with many people, including teachers, during my time in Australia, and those challenges opened my eyes and showed me that sometimes people are jealous. They want what you have and because they can’t have it, they’ll call you out on it.
I’m 18-years-old, and my experiences have given me character. At times I’m the shy kid and at other times, I’m the loudest in the room. But in the end, I’m always the kid from Australia seek- ing the challenge. In the back of my mind, I just keep trying to impress and give back to those closest to me who have sacrificed for me.
