In times of cheap flights, and trips serving as status symbols (#travellifestyle), visiting the world in a sustainable manner can be challenging. Right… can. It doesn’t have to be!
Here are some ideas to get your sustainable Eurotrip going.
#1 Visit Europe’s secret vegan hotspot
Having developed a vibrant and affordable plant-based food scene, Warsaw is considered a vegan hotspot. Even better: The Polish capital is ranked among the top 20 vegan cities worldwide by HappyCow.
Also, the Polish culture is extremely open and guest-friendly, not to mention cheap beer!
#2 Try the new night train routes
There is an increase in night train routes in Europe. Especially in Germany and Austria, new overnighters have been in place since the end of 2023. Yay! Find a full overview of European night trains here.
#3 Let’s go to Great Britain… without a plane!
Ryanair? Pah, we don’t do that! The Eurostar train provides a convenient connection from Amsterdam to London. The journey takes about four hours — directly from city center to city center, with no need for airport transfers. Ticket prices start around 100 EUR for a return trip.
The Eurostar arrives at St Pancras International station in London, which is well-known for the Harry Potter fictional Platform 9¾: The station features a one-fourth scale replica of King’s Cross station, including a trolley disappearing into the wall at Platform 9¾. How cool is that?
#4 Watch a game of that crazy vegan soccer club
Now that you’re already in Great Britain, there’s something great for sustainable sports lovers: “The World’s Greenest Football Club” Forest Green Rovers (FGR). The vegan football club from Nailsworth close to Brisbane does not fail to prove its not-too-humble slogan.
Next to being the only vegan soccer club worldwide, FGR is measuring and minimizing their emissions and their facilities are run by 100% renewable energy. Also, they are currently planning their new stadium “Eco Park”. The club is part of the EFL League Two.
#5 AirBnB but make it green
The sustainable travel platform Ecobnb offers sustainable accommodation all over the world and offers a range of bio hotels, tree houses, organic farms, or bed & breakfast on the beach. This is a great alternative to AirBnB which is accused of damaging local housing markets as it causes housing shortage and drives rental costs up for the local population.
Ecobnb requires hosts to meet at least 5 of 10 of their eco-criteria, such as using renewable energy, providing organic or local food, and implementing energy-saving practices. Ecobnb was founded around ten years ago in Italy and has been growing ever since.
#6 The Italian island in the lake
Monte Isola in Nothern Italy has been recognized as one of the best sustainable (hiking) destinations in Europe. The town is located on the islands of Montisola, Loreto, and San Paolo in Lake Iseo.
It is known for its commitment to protecting the environment and local heritage, as well as developing activities that respect the natural world. It offers opportunities for digital detox and hosts sustainable events, f.e. the Santa Croce Festival.
Wish you safe & sustainable travels!
